The University of California's first Commencement was on July 16, 1873 at Cal's North Hall. The 12 graduates, called "the Twelve Apostles," became a Governor, 3 UC Regents, a mayor, a minister, a math professor, University Librarian, a lawyer, an engineer, a banker & a rancher.

Irving Stone, BA 1923, MA 1924, was born July 14, 1903. He wrote best-selling biographical novels about artists and intellectuals, including "Lust for Life" (van Gogh) & "The Agony & the Ecstasy" (Michelangelo), which became award-winning films. And he was on Cal's boxing team!

Rube Goldberg, Class of 1904, was born July 4, 1883. Goldberg combined his Cal degree as a mining engineer with artistic talent to draw bizarrely complex machines for performing simple tasks. "Rube Goldberg" became a common term for any wildly over-complicated device or scheme.
