The number of emperor penguins in the Bellingshausen and Weddell Sea declined by 22% over the period 2009-23, a reduction of 1.6% per year, exceeding predictions from population models, according to a paper in @CommsEarth. go.nature.com/45mlOhO
Few of you know that my lab is also active in whale research. That's why I’m urging you to sign the petition to free anti-whaling activist Paul Watson. Denmark may extradite him to Japan, where he faces a 15-year prison sentence. paulwatsonfoundation.org/freepaulwatson/

Thrilled to share that our paper on 3D traction force measurements of migrating immune cells (and growing axon growth cones) is now published in Nature Physics: rdcu.be/dU9Nj. Huge thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen!

The annual Physics of Cancer meeting in Leipzig has been my favorite meeting for the past 14 years. The 15th installment will be from 30. Sept. - Oct. 02. Mark your calendars. conference.uni-leipzig.de/poc/2024/

It is great to be back in Antarctica doing penguin research. Avian flu has not arrived here yet, but elsewhere in Antarctica, and we are very concerned. Emperor penguins are already at risk from global warming and really don't need any more threats.

Our latest preprint is up! Ever wonder about the mechanics of immune cell migration? Come check out our new work from postdoc @AlexiaCaillier: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Just wrapped up the #CellMech2023 meeting. It was a great experience. Here are some highlights from the talks I attended. Apologies for not adding them all 👇 1/n 🧵
Extremely proud of our Ph.D. student, @YerbolTagay, who just published his first-author paper. We determined that #microtubules act as the mechanical force transmission system for #Dynein‐Powered #CellLocomotion that Guides #Metastasis of #BreastCancer onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ad…
Traction force microscopy is challenging. A less quantitative but simpler approach is to analyze the alignment and remodeling of matrix fibers around contractile cells. Does it actually work, and how? Take a closer look at biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh…
Summer school "Mechanics in Biology" at Loch Lomond in action. A wonderful group of students and a perfect location, thank you so much, Massimo Vassalli @MassiVassi and Mathis Riehle @morenorse, for making this possible.
Preprint from the #CCRUs FAB team. Co-culturing brain cancer cells with PSC-derived organoids: is it worth the effort? Cancer relevant signalling changes detected by SWATH-MS suggest yes! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
After 7 years of experimentation, we are coming up with a story about what directs orientation of muscles in the body. We tried to understand what primes and refines the orientation of myoblasts prior to attachment to skeleton and following fusion. nature.com/articles/s4146…
To overcome obstacles during migration through a porous extracellular matrix, (almost) all types of immune cells intermittently employ large to very large integrin-mediated traction forces. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

25 years ago, Dan Tschumperlin and Susan Margulies published their landmark paper on the effects of mechanical stretch on lung epithelial cells, explaining the mechanism of ventilator-induced lung injury at the cellular level. doi.org/10.1152/ajplun…
