What is the point of therapy? - Psychotherapy faces skepticism in psychiatry, yet it remains vital for understanding patients' narratives and enhancing therapeutic relationships. My latest article: Reclaiming the Narrative: Why Psychiatrists Must Learn Psychotherapy Link below

Can people stop needing meds? Yes. Many patients visit my practice (and others) on meds and leave without. Note - This isn't the only or right outcome for all. How can you tell if recovery has occurred? Mental illness involves "impairment in social, occupational, or other key…
Dr. Badre, the premise of therapy is that people can change. Can they change enough so they no longer need psychiatric drug treatment? This would be a treatment success, but how can you tell if this has occurred? What should psychiatrists do if the patient no longer needs them?
Nice article. I believe in no psychiatrist is complete unless he is trained in psychotherapy or at least understands that everything cannot be treated by chemicals.
Thoughtful article in Psychiatric Times. But the real information is the fact that it has to be written at all The opening fits my experience. When I first became a professor of psychiatry and taught psychotherapy, the residents asked: What does this have to do with psychiatry?

I love the APA and want it to succeed, but I am not sure that this statement is most representative of the sources they cite. To say "There is no overall evidence that SSRIs are unsafe during pregnancy" They cite Clarke et al. 2023's white paper, which indeed says "Recent…

This is a serious problem. Psychotherapists have to provide a better product that is useful and compelling to men. Part of this is recognizing that some men are looking for something different in therapy; they often have different needs, desire, goals. It reminds me somewhat…
Research found that dropout rates for men in therapy is around 44.8%. Why are so many leaving treatment? Many say the format and framing of the sessions didn’t align with what they need. We have to have more male-led and male-focused therapy solutions! Ideas?
Fascinating interview and story. As a forensic psychiatrist I often see the consequences of addiction, and our poor attempts at solving this problem. @JaredKlickstein makes many important points and has lived through those issues.
Great convo on @triggerpod, thanks for having me on🙏 check out the whole ep on X or YouTube
Very interesting (though difficult to listen to at times). I am surprised to see a psychiatrist seemingly saying that "clearly" the DSM is highly valid, biomarkers for mental illness work, antidepressants reduce suicide, ...
The most infuriating part of this interview was that after repeatedly stating the data is clear and there is no debate on SSRI's and the "chemical imbalance theory of depression" he later agreed that the research he relies upon to draw conclusions is systemically biased, flawed…
Interesting thread. Bio markers have so far seemed like gimmicks. Reminds of this quote - No “defined a neurobiological basis for any psychiatric condition or symptom dimensions” Nour et al, 2022
I’m a critic of biomarker-guided psychopharmacology—not because the ambition is misplaced, but because most attempts have amounted to gimmicks, offering the illusion of precision to a population starved for clarity. 🧵
Some say that @BadreNicolas seems cool.
I think therapy can be really helpful & i'm sure some of them are lovely! @BadreNicolas seems cool. Unfortunately, classic psychoanalytic theory is full of sexism that has never been adequately acknowledged or excised. BPD should have been retired, not scientized.
Your story is meaningful, showing a powerful example of someone thriving without the lens of psychopathology, DSM, or medicalization. It applies to many, though not all. I'm concerned our medical system lacks avenues for this non-pathologizing perspectives. Many…
My story is not one of “misdiagnosis” or “overmedication.” I sought help from our country’s top psych institutions + “met the criteria” for the various DSM labels I was given. My experience of treatment-induced harm is the byproduct of the MH industry working exactly as intended.
