An internist in biotech
I've been hearing a lot about this common concern: "Are kids getting too many vaccines?" It's a fair question. I'm a parent too. And as an infectious diseases physician who directs an antibiotic stewardship program, a big part of my job is stopping unnecessary medications. I'm…

Alarming article about overly aggressive organ procurement. I believe these cases represent a tiny fraction of organ donations but they cast a shadow on the whole effort. nytimes.com/2025/07/20/us/… via @NYTimes
The crucial difference with CAR-T is those approved drugs actually work.
$srpt Imagine these reporters made a big story out of every CAR-T cell-related death. I would like to remind them that they, too, are 'gene therapies'. It is more fun though to pick on smaller 'story biotechs' than Big Pharma.
Agreed—the startup process is more onerous and so is downsizing or winding down a company. It’s not an entrepreneur friendly environment.
Have been to Germany four times over the last year. It's nice and there is interesting work happening there, but zero chance it out-innovates the U.S. (or China), or outcompetes us for talent over time. Europe has structural problems that are much larger than ours.
Nice visual representation of China's current advantage in patient recruitment / trial enrollment Oncology & Obesity Ph1s & 2s enroll 6-9 months faster in China than in the US H/t @business
Interesting that even in the latest data tirzepatide discontinuations are similar to sema The fact is GLP1s (alone or in combo) are not drugs for chronic use. But obesity and its clinical sequelae are chronic diseases The opportunity for new MoAs is immense
Yet another study showing high discontinuation rate of both semaglutide and tirzepatide up to 50% at 1 year in the real world. Top discontinuation reasons included: • Side effects (36%) • Logistical challenges (24%) • Cost (23%) • Shortages (11%) • Inadequate weight loss…
Milei ended rent freezes in Argentina: Mortgage costs went down by 30% Rent prices went down by 26% Housing supply is up 212% Funny how that works
Day #347 -- Merkel cell carcinoma log. There is a persistent insistence on offering best case scenarios in cancer care. “You’re doing great,” the go-to answer in the movies when you’re bleeding out from a mortal wound, is the daily reality for cancer patients. I’ve heard it from…
As a CEO, the day to day work and mission (patients, team) is really rewarding and what drives so many of us. With that said, I sometimes see colleagues lose sight of the fact that we need to deliver what we promised to shareholders. What you told them you would do as close as…
The facts are simple and devastating: Aid cuts have already cost lives, and the number of deaths will continue to rise. Here’s the evidence.
An excellent new article published survival curves for the 1750s and the 2010s, and the difference could not be more stark. You can really see the incredible contributions of reductions in early life mortality to the increase in life expectancies.
Most life extension we've collectively experienced since industrialization has been due to removing extrinsic causes of mortality and broad public health fixes. But that won't cut it anymore. The low-hanging fruit was picked. To extend lifespans, biotech must be accelerated🧵
Lacks a comparator group. Most people with a deficiency in the table just have low Vitamin D. What’s the rate of Vitamin D deficiency in a comparable population not treated with GLP1? Probably very high.
Retrospective claims data reveals over 20 % of GLP-1 medicine users had nutritional deficiencies diagnosed within one-year of starting GLP-1RA treatment. pdf.sciencedirectassets.com/780950/1-s2.0-…

Consistent with many young people not knowing they have high cholesterol, many young people with high cholesterol are not currently on a lipid lowering medication. This is not good, since it means they're likely accruing cardiovascular damage.
Large portions of Americans have no idea that they have - Hypertension - High cholesterol - And, shockingly, diabetes! One wonders how many serious conditions people are living with, undiagnosed.

$HIMS — $NVO, $XBI From @BiotechCH, hard to better summarize the zero value add proposition of $HIMS in GLP-1s than this: Tim Opler: The original deal was sort of weird, because you can go buy semaglutide directly from $NVO, from their direct website, and $HIMS was literally…

There needs to be a name for when people start wearing continuous glucose monitors and it adds +5 points to neuroticism. I've seen so many people start freaking out about their blood sugar after they put on CGMs, but there's just no point. My proposal is "CGM Neurosis".
