Long-range forecast models are indicating increased activity in the MDR. This suggests that tropical waves originating off the African coast are becoming more robust as we approach August. Expect heightened monitoring in the coming weeks and beyond.

Very impressive warming in the Tropical ATL since the beginning of July. Note the green arrows of enhanced westerly wind anomalies in the MDR. Over the next 2 weeks, continued warming is expected over the MDR, with the bulk of the warming concentrated in the East/Central ATL.

New Copernicus multi-model ensemble data suggests La Niña could return to the Pacific within months — a notable cooling shift compared to last month’s outlook. This could have important implications for the peak of Atlantic hurricane season, as La Niña promotes more activity.

We're out of the spring predictability barrier now, which should lead to more accurate forecasts. I would say there's decent agreement from all but two of the main dynamical models on a shift toward traditional La Niña thresholds over the coming months.

Wow, the Multivariate ENSO index came in at -0.98 for May-June, well into La Niña territory, and marginally lower than last winter's minimum. Not surprisingly, the NMME models have shifted significantly towards La Niña for this autumn.
