If it's this big shouldn't they be their own load serving entities and not buy retail anymore? For those that know better please tell me the reasons why this would be smart or really dumb If they were their own LSEs then what would happen to carbon accounting and using VPPAs.
It is hard to get your head around how stupendously large an electricity user a 2-5 gigawatt data center represents. A 5 gigawatt data center consumes on the order of 40 million megawatt-hours of electricity per year, as much electricity as the ENTIRE STATE of Nevada or Kansas!
This sounds like a good reason for bilateral agreements and retail structures that charge the large loads for their impact in a take or pay sort of way?
