Professor Mary Beard helped celebrate 100 years of the Friends of the Bodleian by delivering their much anticipated Annual Lecture, on the theme 'Risky encounters: the library in fact and fiction'. Watch the full talk on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/watch?v=5VAz94….
I am enjoying the @bbcr4 programme about Socrates right now. But the philosopher's celebrity status is beginning to get me down. I agree that asking questions of the powerful is a dangerous game, but the idea that the Socratic method is what underlies what thinking is....?
I wonder who actually reads those books called something like "What's the point of the humanities". Not those intending to attack the humanities, that's for sure. tinyurl.com/bdhktcc2 @TheTLS
While this site seems determined to drive them away, here’s a reminder of just some of the good guys out there that I love and respect IRL: @theAliceRoberts @JANUSZCZAK @laurenlaverne @wmarybeard @bettanyhughes @arthistorynews @DeborahMeaden @AdamRutherford @MichaelRosenYes

I have a look at sex on the floor at Pompeii -- that is in the small erotic mosaic just returned to the site from Germany. The content is more interesting than many people have been saying: tinyurl.com/ht576y5b

Of course I’m not ok & of course deplore . But one tactic is to block it out by replying only to the simple question. Cancel by just cancelling. I shd know better than to try even tiny subtlety. But, as I said, enough for me. Maybe back in few days. Till then not even a peek.
Is anyone else turning off the @BBCr4today (aka Trumpfest). I realise that there is an art to clever flattery. But this is more than I can take.
I was lucky enough to see it in Bayeux in June. It's going to be taken down so a new, flatter display can be built. Gravity has taken its toll at the bottom of the tapestry. The British Museum is not a bad place to look after it. It will be interesting to see how it's displayed.
I talked to Theo Jones #SoAatHome last week about a load of things, including how I write, where, with what little rituals. You can watch here vimeo.com/1101160745
I am looking forward to seeing the Bayeux Tapestry in the @britishmuseum next year. But I coness I hadnt realised that there was a full sized Victorian embroidered replica in Reading (plus a whole history of copying) tinyurl.com/cp5rhkw7

Too many bodies in the library, skeletons in the bookstacks. Starting from Inspector Morse (of course) I ask why there is so much crime in fictional libraries: tinyurl.com/mjfsxk67
