Gustaf Fjæstad's 'The Ice Lake,' (1902) projects a romantic longing for nature, such a driving force for many second generation nationalistic painters in Sweden working at the turn of the 20thC when an emotional response to the landscape was favoured over realism.
Eliot Hodgkin's 'Brioche and knife,' (1961) offers a small feast for the eye. Some still-lifes are a brief inventory of goods but with Hodgkin we can be sure when he depicts food it is not a mere demonstration of form but belongs to the realm of appetite.
