What surprises me is that others are surprised by this. The arrogance of some PAs - that they can simply refuse to comply with the findings of a review, accepted in full by the SoS - is no different to the arrogance displayed on a daily basis by many others working in healthcare
The sad - and infuriating - thing is that women’s h/c has barely moved on from a diagnosis of “hysteria”. It’s a global problem bc societal misogyny is global. Whenever I post about it, I get pushback, almost always from male doctors
I’ll happily repeat and endorse anything you have said @LittlePersonDoc - and then let them try and find a professional regulator they can report me to
Very good Q. Imo they weren’t created / imported bc the NHS needed them, the aim (by Hunt and others) was to reduce the power of the med profn, take doctors down a peg or two, hold back doctors’ salaries, disable strike action. Pure and simple.
Wow! I missed this yesterday So insightful. Those who raised concerns, those who turned a blind eye, the RCs who did/do nothing, the enablers. But it was never, for me, personal - everyone has to make a living, do their best. In the spirit of the last para, fucking amazing 🙏
1/n I want to say something about PAs. I don’t know yet if this will be long or short cause I am not psychic. What I do know is this: the situation has become a mess. Not just administratively. Not just professionally. But emotionally. And it’s going to leave scars.
Speechless
NHS facing ‘absolutely shocking’ £27bn bill for maternity failings in England | NHS | The Guardian | Great to see everything so many of us have sacrificed our lives for, after the avoidable deaths of our babies, has made such a difference. Fucking waste. theguardian.com/society/2025/j…
That’s true, the whole project is now in an awful mess. It’s cost a huge amount of money for the NHS to end up with thousands of over-educated assistants. All when Streeting could have acted decisively 12 months ago - such an easy win too
There might be a case for misrepresentation, yes - but it would turn on the wording used. I’m sure I could write a prospectus entry offering, say, MSc PAssociate Studies with an explanation that when qualified the title would be PAssistant. That would prob be enough
Re the PA name change and unis. Imo the name change applies to h/c, so unis aren’t obliged to change the name of courses - and I understand why they wouldn’t want to. What they must NOT do tho is mislead prospective students into thinking they’ll have a career as an PAssociate
WtR may or may not be “industrial action”. I know that isn’t helpful, but the law is confusing on this. (1) it depends on the contract; (2) if it constitutes a “withdrawal of goodwill” then it can be ind action and a breach of contract - BT plc v Ticehurst and Thompson (1992)
Have been indulging in some self-care. Hope I didn’t miss anything important 😉 I’m sorry I didn’t feel strong enough to respond to all the women who posted and DM’d me their stories of gynae VAWG. Pls believe that I share your hurt and distress
I’m late to the party, but I have now read the Leng Report. I’m actually quite impressed by it. I had heard that she was a good choice for the job and that seems to be the case It is ofc a compromise, it was always going to be. It has many flaws and much is left to some 1/3
I’m now going to scroll thru and see what @TomStocks1982 has said about Leng - I want to be told, with suitably colourful language and without mincing words, what’s wrong with it!
vague notion of how things will pan out in the future. But it recommends some important changes, which I think will benefit pt safety and confidence, and it is heartening that @wesstreeting has said he accepts the recommendations in full. We wait and see I think the process 2/3
Ofc unis can do whatever they want, but imho if they retain the course titles as they are, they risk inviting complaints to the Office of the Ind Adjudicator and possible legal action. But it’s up to them, they might think it worth the risk 🤷♀️
I said months and months ago, and many times over, that recruitment should be paused for 2025/6 and only resumed if and when the situation was clarified
Thank you Prof. On balance, I think today has been a good day 🙂
