Stirrups Now!
@uniformcritic
Fan of baseball history & of bringing stirrups back to the game.
OTD 1989: Nolan Ryan is sitting at 4,999 strikeouts. He and Rickey Henderson have an epic dual…Ryan at age 42 brings everything he has with some extraordinary pitches.
2016: Ichiro gets his 3,000th hit in the majors… it’s his 4,278 professional hit…he’d end up with 4,367!
The white blur is the ball bouncing well in front of home plate, Ichiro hits it off the bounce for a single. #nippon

Ichiro started his career w/ 10 consecutive seasons of 200+ hits. No one ever had more than 8 (Keeler). #Greatness

Vin Scully calls the double play tag out by Carlton Fisk in 1985. Vin is brilliant throughout as is Joe Garagiola.
Tony O was a hitter plain & simple…In his career HOFer Tony Oliva hit .304 against starting pitchers and .304 against relievers. He also hit .304 on the road and .304 at Metropolitan Stadium.
Shoeless Joe Jackson was born on this date in 1887. Here he is in 1913 with the Cleveland Naps when he hit .373/.460/.551 (192 OPS+). It was arguably just the third best season of his career.

40 years ago tonight…Your 1985 NL All Star reserves!
40 years ago tonight this Cal Ripken graphic was shown at the 1985 All Star Game.

What’s happened to the MLB All Star Celebrity Softball Game? Watched 4 mins of it as I finished my lunch. Saw multiple plays that made my eyes bleed. Just horrible. Remember when Fred Lynn & Rollie Fingers would play? It was fun, but didn’t resemble a poorly run T ball game.
Today in 1971 Harmon Killebrew connects for a massive HR at the All Star Game. He hit .308/.357/.654 in 28 ASG plate appearances.
The last #Reds player to wear an all red, no drop shadow hat in an ASG was Barry Larkin in 1997.
Random Wilt Chamberlain: In 1959 he played his first ever NBA game…43 points and 28 rebounds. He played all 48 minutes.

Frank Howard was big, but Harmon Killebrew was more in powerful. 573 HRs > 382 HRs
I like that Dave Roberts wears the Dodger uniform. Not a hoodie & not a long sleeve pullover that’s belongs on a discount rack. He wears the uniform of the team he manages. Wish more did.

I miss 2nd base slides during double plays.
The bobble from Gaetti here almost cost Al Newman his life
From 1955-1970 Hank Aaron averaged 109 runs scored & 111 RBIs. Which equated to a 160 OPS+. How many hitters have been better than him? Three? Possibly zero?
