You can actually maintain what's best of both if you realize that the "irreducibility" is in fact not irreducible. Individual responsibility still matters but so does an understanding of the structural stultification that conditions the horizons of all supposed individuals.
In the WL era, my "left" was about creating conditions for virtuous thinking and action It was juxtaposed to a "right" that blames and shames individuals & groups for irreducibly social and political problems I am still on the left in this sense But no one else is
