This kind of advice is a huge pet peeve of mine. People succeed in all different ways. Phrases that I've found help me give better advice: -"Doing ... did/didn't work for me" -"I've seen people have success doing ..." -"If your goal is ... then you might want to ..."
7/ Beware of Absolute Advice You'll hear a lot of "you MUST do X" or "you SHOULD NEVER do Y." Honestly, most advice is subjective or even random. Take everything with a grain of salt.

I’ve made this point before, but it bears repeating: if academia becomes an institution devoted to partisan activism, it will become increasing difficult to defend the claim that the taxpayers should be funding it
