I'm grateful to be part of this NPR feature discussing federal funding for IDEA. @nprcoryturner skillfully crafted the narrative, highlighting voices of key figures involved in shaping this crucial legislation. Full story at: npr.org/2024/12/26/nx-… #IDEA #specialed #AIRinforms
David Sciarra, the lion of school funding litigation, sums up decades of hard fought wisdom in a single interview: focus on the state, not local, responsibility. State constitutions place the duty on the state and no-one else (save a few quirky states). edweek.org/policy-politic…
In this @BrookingsEd piece, @bdhuey and I examine proposals that would shift IDEA funding outside the traditional framework. The proposals highlight trade offs between greater flexibility and the enforcement mechanisms that have long defined IDEA. brookings.edu/articles/trump…
Great new @educationweek article by about the U.S. Department of Education's National Study of Special Education Spending (NSSES)! The study is being conducted by @AIRinforms, with its partners @NORCnews and @AllovueBalance. edweek.org/teaching-learn… #specialed #educationfinance
Great to see this work highlighted by @TCRecord! We show that the amount of time available for science instruction matters, and that teachers need *at least 5 hours per week* of instructional time to use inquiry-based instructional practices.
In their feature article, Dr. @takolbe, Dr. Steele, and Dr. White examine how time availability for science instruction relates to the extent to which teachers used inquiry-based instructional methods: ow.ly/Cp3S50QvWYL @AIRInforms @uvmcess @bigpiclearning @ACSDVTschools

Almost 50 years after the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (#IDEA), students with disabilities still do not have equitable access to the educational opportunities that the federal government guarantees them. AIR's @takolbe discusses the current #specialed landscape:
Last year, a Virginia class action lawsuit revealed the state’s education hearing officers sided with parents of students with disabilities in less than 2 percent of cases. This year, a judge dropped the case. motherjones.com/politics/2023/…
Fantastic article in Mother Jones making connections between inadequate resources for teachers and the inequitable special education funding system: motherjones.com/politics/2023/…
"We should never pit kids against kids. This,” she says, “is a grown-up problem.” It's time to fix special education funding. #fixspecialedfunding motherjones.com/politics/2023/…

New work with @bdhuey and @saradoutre shows how existing IDEA funding formula distributes federal $'s among states inequitably. The key take away: More IDEA $'s are not enough-we also need to fix the funding formula to ensure equal opportunities for SWD across states @edfunding
Outdated funding formulas continue to widen gaps that shortchange students with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, researchers say. #EdChat edweek.org/teaching-learn…
