Never thought the day would come and still hoping it won't as XTwitter still works better for me than the alternatives. However, as insurance I'd advise you to follow me on the others and I'll follow you back. All the links on my personal website. stuartbruce.info/#:~:text=NEWSL…

Not sure why, but Rhinos are my favourite animal.
Rich because I saw this with my own eyes. #nature
"In the summer of 1975 I was a postman not a politician. Twenty-five years of age, married with three children, I was living on a council estate in Slough where our neighbours, like us, had been moved out of the slums of west London." observer.co.uk/news/opinion-a…
Sustainability has become the most frequent criticism I hear about AI. There is a lack of reliable data. This data indicates it's much less of a problem than many believe. The only certainty is it is improving and a solveable problem.
This chart is apparently already out of date and overemphasizes water use, according to the numbers OpenAI released, 300 average ChatGPT queries is equivalent to 20 tablespoons of water, not 1 gallon.
Today's Northern Agenda highlights how ridiculous aspects of data protection laws are. It's awful destruction is even part of regulations. Most data are valuable historic records. Keep it secure, but destroy nothing. sbpr.cc/pVjdB

The UK’s military support for Ukraine this year is more than ever before. @JohnHealey_MP confirmed at today's Ukraine Defence Contact Group that the 🇬🇧 has delivered 50,000 drones to 🇺🇦 in the last six months and £150m worth of air defence and artillery in the last two months.

🚨New from us: Given they are trained on human data, can you use psychological techniques that work on humans to persuade AI? Yes! Applying Cialdini's principles for human influence more than doubles the chance of GPT-4o-mini agrees to objectionable requests compared to controls
Rachel Reeves tells a story about a schoolgirl asking her what job she'd do if she could do anything in the world. Reeves quips: "Given the events of the last few weeks, I suspect many of you would sympathise if I had said, 'anything but chancellor'". trib.al/YKanzN3
What does AI say about you? I've compared ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Claude and Grok. Can you guess the best and worst? sbpr.cc/Go0df
And with this, the US is mostly out of the frontier open source large LLM race. Europe has one contender, otherwise it is all China now. (OpenAI is going to release an open LLM soon, but no commitment yet to that being an ongoing effort).

Congratulations to Rachel Reeves and Darren Jones for announcing the £500 million social impact fund which will help transform children and youth services in the coming years and into which social investors may add an additional £500 million.
An example of the energy sector’s obfuscation culture. It is complex, largely self-governing and parts of it are highly profitable while shouldering almost no risk. Unsurprisingly, it prefers to conduct policy/regulation/governance without pesky scrutiny from journalists.
When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression. Our rivals in this debate reacted aggressively to our attempt to bring it into the light. A single company had 240 lobbyists on staff. Paid ‘research’ was published absent underlying data, dodging scrutiny.
Dishonest assertions about Octopus’s (and, bizarrely, Kraken’s) business were made to ministers in private and later in public. A number of very powerful CEOs made astonishingly personal attacks on @g__j. Companies used to operating as a cosy club did not welcome transparency.
Not taxing unearned wealth is criminal.
In the next 30 years, £5.5trn will pass from one generation to the next, much of it unearned wealth from house price growth since the 1990s. Not taxing it would be insane
This article by @andrewpakes_ on how Labour listens to and responds to working-class, blue-collar communities is well worth a read. labourlist.org/2025/07/commen…
This appears to be a huge mistake. The arguments for zonal pricing appear to make sense. If those against it have a case, they need to explain it much better as it appears to make no sense. @g__j and @OctopusEnergy make a far more compelling case.
BREAKING: Govt has now ruled out plans for regional electricity pricing. As per BBG story by @PronouncedAlva and others. But new details: - Decision has gone to cabinet - Officials are sorting through alternatives - Announcement by early Aug theguardian.com/business/2025/…
