Computational linguist (Assoc Prof @UWlinguistics), asking among other questions: why are languages structured the way they are? Views my own. He/him.
Now that it's website official: I'm beyond thrilled to be joining @UWlinguistics (and the broader @uwnlp community) as an Assistant Professor this Fall! linguistics.washington.edu/news/2019/04/3…
📣 I'm recruiting PhD students this cycle! Researchers interested in expanding NLP for mid- and low-resource languages - and/or developing tools for endangered languages and field linguistics - should apply to work with me either through the UR Ling or CS PhD programs!
🧙 Come be my colleague! We have TWO Assistant Professor positions that might be of particular interest to folks in my reach, in Linguistics and CS. These hires are parts of an AI cluster hiring initiative led by @BU_CDS. More below 👇

Happy to say that this work has been accepted to Findings of #EMNLP2024! Thanks to my fantastic co-authors for getting it across the finish line. I'll probably come to Miami to present it, so come say hi if you find the work interesting!
Preprint! We test methods to adapt a crosslingual model to a language family, and argue for targeted multilinguality as a middle ground for low-resource langs, avoiding the "curse of multilinguality" arxiv.org/abs/2405.12413 w/@TerraBlvns, @quirkyDhwani, @dwija_parikh, @ssshanest

Congrats to Lelia!! Check out the new _Language and Computers_, a great intro book. Am feeling like an adult now w/ my first back cover book blurb too 😱 (w/ @kmahowald )
It is here!! Aiming with this book to widen the bridge between linguistics and computing - welcoming humanities-confident folks to explore computational approaches and encouraging computing-confident folks to appreciate the social/structural richness of language data.

Very happy to see this paper on our cross-linguistic database of modals published! doi.org/10.1075/lv.230… In the paper, we describe the design of the database and discuss three case studies on how it can be used to investigate cross-ling universal and variation in modals.
If you know of a job opportunity for a computational linguist or NLP researcher or as an RA/PhD student please let me know. A good graduate of Brandeis computational linguistics is looking for a job to satisfy OPT requirements asap & would appreciate your help. LinkedIn below
It's been an absolute pleasure and honor advising, working with, and now finally hooding @cmdowney !! Can't wait to see the big things yet to come!
A bit belated, but I finished my PhD! Can't express enough thanks to my amazing advisors @ssshanest and Gina for their investment in my time at UW. Excited for my next adventure of joining the faculty at the University of Rochester!
Another great paper from @cmdowney! Adapting multilingual language models to targeted language families has lots of benefits for low-resource languages; includes detailed analysis of which factors matter too!
