Back then, they mocked me, my drills, and my shooting instructions, but now every time I open IG, all I see are NBA players doing the same type of drills. amazon.com/Evolution-180-…
Imagine criticizing a shooting drill while out here posting this
Coaches: Less is sometimes more. 🎯 Three coaches ran nearly identical SSGs under four conditions: no intervention, verbal prompts, in-game manipulation, and free-form intervention. Interestingly: Coach 🅰 discovered that in some scenarios—even without intervention—players…
The problem is not shooting three-pointers. The problem is a societal unwillingness to modify the game to fit the needs of children: Lower hoops, smaller balls, shorter three-point line. The problem is the rush to the end. See @playmak3rs for more info: playmakersleague.com
Kids are hurting themselves when they shoot 3-pointers too young.
How do you stack the development deck in your favour? If you want to increase player development, you need to increase the probability of learning occurring That means designing environments that invite growth Here's a few ideas from work I did for an NBA team:
We spend so much time planning and running practices… but how often do we actually review them? ⠀ Not just how the players performed, but how we coached: - The feedback we gave - The constraints we set - The scoring system we used ⠀ Having a clear review process creates real…
At 31.8% this season, the Magic had the worst 3-point percentage of any team in the last 10 years.

"we're always thinking about: how can we create an environment and put our players in situations for them to learn and develop?" It's all about the eXPerience - shootxp.com/blog/xp-princi…
How did Shai Gilgeous-Alexander develop elite finishing and footwork? Not through instruction alone—but through years of playing, experimenting & adapting. OKC’s development approach focuses on game-like reps over isolated drills. Listen to Mark Daigneault ⤵️
"create the experience first" 👏 We agree - shootxp.com/blog/xp-princi…
They aren't defying you They just haven’t had the moment that makes your insight theirs You are giving them a reflection before they’ve had the experience to reflect on ✅ What to do instead: Create the experience first. Let the problem emerge naturally Then give it language…

Elite coaches don’t just “fix technique”—they negotiate it. 🧠 New study (Vecchione et al. 2025): Great coaches loop through observation, constraint tuning & collaboration. No copy-paste models. No one-size drills. 👀 Change = co-created, dynamic & responsive.…
Why the Origin of the Word “Coach” Matters...
Did you know “coach” originally referred to a stagecoach? 🐎 📍15th century Kocs, Hungary → “kocsi szekér” = wagon of Kocs 📚 By the 1700s, students in England called their tutors coaches — because they carried them to the exam. 🏀 Today? Coaches still carry people forward.…

Teams seduced by players shooting alone in gyms, posting 40-inch VJs and 9’ wingspans & ignore what actually happened in games. The combine obsession I mentioned last week... Also, influence of sports scientists who can measure athletic qualities (but not actual performance)
When I hear of players “rising up draft boards,” I remember Bill Polian saying that when he was a GM & they did a deep dive on their previous NFL Drafts, the first board they put together after the college season was usually the most accurate. I feel that way.
Hate to ruin the narrative, but there is virtually no correlation between any of pre-draft combine tests and NBA performance measures.
