In 1902, with the Russo-Japanese War on the horizon, some Ainu submitted a petition to the Minister of War requesting the formation of an Ainu unit. They were clearly demonstrating their nationalism by asking to serve. In the end, 63 Ainu enlisted and were sent to the front.
