This small building was once used as a lookout point for shoals of pilchards off the coast of Newquay in Cornwall. 🐟 It was used by someone called a 'huer' to watch the sea and alert the town when fish were nearby. The locals would then rush to launch their fishing boats.
In praise of seaside B&Bs and guest houses. A great example of a row of well preserved Victorian houses, in Llandudno, that are now B&Bs or guest houses There is something homely and traditional about them that hotels never replicate. @seaside_network @HistoricEngland #Wales
Shown below, courtesy of @Kentishtrivia, is Detective Inspector Edmund Reid who lived at Hampton-on-Sea from 1903 until coastal erosion forced him to move in 1916. He was head of the Criminal Investigation Department in the @metpoliceuk at the time of the Whitechapel murders.
No idea where he was married, but I believe he ran a pub in Herne for a year or so, before opening the Hampton-on-Sea Hotel selling postcards and refreshments.
