this might me the most asinine thing i’ve ever read she can’t remember her exact weight so she’s not credible? she said a figure of speech, “her truth,” so that means it’s not really what happened?? are we serious here??
Heart hurts for EM today. I understand that the onus of proof was not met. That doesn’t make her story untrue. She was put through the wringer with the victim blaming during the trial. I fear it will deter other SA victims from coming forward in future.
I only hope that this won’t discourage victims of sexual assault from coming forward, and that E.M. can find some form of peace on the other side of it all. Try to remember that she had nothing to gain by putting herself through months of anxious and insulting cross.

the idea that a survivor has to be 100% perfect and accurate all the time when we know how experiencing trauma can affect memory is flawed on so many levels. survivors shouldn’t have to be perfect to be believed.

today and every day, believe survivors. the highest court in canada has acknowledged the legal system is not well equipped to handle sex assault cases. perhaps your trite tweets about legal concepts like presumption of innocence and due process are inapt and unnecessary.
While serious efforts are being made by a range of actors to address and remedy these failings both within the criminal justice system and throughout Canadian society more broadly, this case attests to the fact that more needs to be done. Put simply, we can — and must — do better
