Chicago Tribune investigative reporter, author "The City is Up for Grabs." Little Village raised. Proud @ctguild. I'm just trying to make my city a better place

Lizzie is totally fearless. She's pin sharp and talented and hard-working. Some outlet is going to get incredibly lucky when they hire her. I'm worse off as a reporter without her in our newsroom with this bad decision, and our readers are worse off too.
I truly believe that housing is one of the most important issues of our time. I hope you will see my byline again soon. I have too many questions left unanswered for anyone to shut me up for long :) If you know of other journalism opportunities out there, please let me know
Our hedge fund owners & management just laid off close to 10% of the the Chicago Tribune newsroom for no clear reason, in essentially the same breath as they offered $88 million to bring the show to Dallas 🙃
Today, @chicagotribune laid off five guild staff members in a roughly 10% cut to our newsroom. These layoffs underscore a sad but unsurprising failure of leadership by Alden Global Capital, our hedge fund owner, and local management.
@lizzie_kane17 is an incredibly talented, smart, hard-working reporter that any news organization would be lucky to have on staff.
I was laid off today by the Chicago Tribune as were several talented colleagues. I was able to report several dream stories during my year or so there, but partially, I had that freedom because “leadership” is completely absentee unless it affects their bottom line.
.@radbrowndads went deep on all angles of Chicago’s vibrant food scene way beyond the plate — the economic, cultural and political winds that power it, but also the fun and community that springs up around it.
I edited Lizzie's work and know how very valuable and talented and dogged she is. By sacking her and other reporters, the Tribune only hurts itself.
I don’t post on this platform anymore, but today is an exception. I’ve been laid off by the @chicagotribune. It was a joy working with so many amazing people in this newsroom.
Lizzie is a superstar and one of our most talented beat reporters. This is apparent to her colleagues, our readers and the many natl and local journalism orgs that have given her awards in the last several months. Self-sabotaging decision by Trib but a win for another newsroom

If you're an editor who is hiring, I want you to take a look at the work Lizzie has produced in the last two weeks alone. There is no one in this town, probably even this country, who can do what she does and I am absolutely crushed at this news Please make our loss your gain

A loss at the Tribune is a loss for all of Chicago. Such amazing staff who covered a wide variety of Chicago news. We need more reporters, not less. Shame on Alden Global Capital.

Hulk Hogan died at 71 today. He is probably the most famous pro wrestler who ever lived and more people paid to see him perform over the course of his career than any other person. Thanks for the memories.
A lot of good, bad and very ugly in Hulk Hogan's life. He was larger than life and a legend. I can't wait to read @davemeltzerWON's obituary and listen to Observer Radio for more.
The latest from me @chicagotribune: how Chicago Public Schools’ budget deficit is already impacting families and community members, including families who have children with special needs and disabilities. So proud of this one. Read below/in print: chicagotribune.com/2025/07/24/cps…
I’m having a hard time visualizing it. Johnson couldn’t get even his closest allies to raise property taxes last year. With the election coming in less than two years, how’s this going to work? On October’s edition of Days of Our Lives
Mayor Brandon Johnson might want to try again to hike property taxes, but many aldermen want spending cuts first — which CFO Jill Jaworski said are also coming. "We need to start talking about stuff we never talked about before," Ald. Matt O'Shea told me. Jaworski's comments:
Ald. Walter Burnett’s wife violated Chicago Housing Authority ethics policy, records obtained by @lizzie_kane17 show. chicagotribune.com/2025/07/23/wal…
Good morning to everyone except bad media owners cc Alden Global Capital
Bad for Dallas, bad for civil society, bad bad bad. Signed, a journalist at an Alden newspaper that’s expecting layoffs despite being profitable.
NEW: Alden Global Capital's MediaNews Group is making a last-minute bid for The Dallas Morning News, which reached a deal with Hearst earlier this month. MediaNews offering $16.50 a share to Hearst's $14 nytimes.com/2025/07/22/bus…
