Mayor Brandon Johnson might want to try again to hike property taxes, but many aldermen want spending cuts first — which CFO Jill Jaworski said are also coming. "We need to start talking about stuff we never talked about before," Ald. Matt O'Shea told me. Jaworski's comments:
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s team teased plans this week to take another swing at raising property taxes to close the city’s more than $1 billion budget gap, despite an aldermanic revolt last year and continued resistance to such a hike. trib.al/Jl50epv
Plan to upzone Broadway promises housing, divides Edgewater — very good in-depth story from @JakeSheridan_ @chicagotribune chicagotribune.com/2025/07/20/pla…
I've been so lucky to learn from & laugh with @CraigDellimore at work. There's no one more fair, kind or loving at City Hall. So grateful for all his past-mayor stories, open ears & newsroom union advice. Here's the moment he saw the "Craig Dellimore Radio Room" unveiled:
Chicago's longest serving aldermen, Ald. Walter Burnett Jr., cries behind glasses as he leaves office. Burnett, who went to prison for a bank robbery as a young man before trying to change his life and entering politics, served 30 years in the City Council.
BLOCKED: A proposal to allow Chicagoans to build granny flats & coach house dwellings across the city without obtaining special permission from city officials WILL NOT get a vote today, after Alds. Quinn & Mitchell, who oppose it, block its approval. news.wttw.com/2025/07/15/key…
Ald. Stephanie Coleman wants to require Chicago boaters to wear life jackets. She is introducing this ordinance requiring life jackets on boats today, weeks after 27-year-old Zahrie Walls drowned in Lake Michigan while boating:

NEW: Mayor Brandon Johnson's veto of the "teen trend" curfew is upheld. The curfew has been shot down. Aldermen voted 27-22 again in support of the anytime, anywhere teen curfew power for Chicago's police superintendent. But they failed to meet the needed 34-vote supermajority.
Aldermen passed a "snap curfew" power for Chicago's police superintendent in a 27-to-22 vote. Now, Mayor Brandon Johnson — who called it unnecessary & "lazy" — will have to decide whether to issue the first mayoral veto in decades. For @chicagotribune: chicagotribune.com/2025/06/18/chi…
Update: Mayor Brandon Johnson administration has now hosted two quarterly public viewings of the controversial gift room. In total, one person has signed up to view the room, and no one has ever shown up.
Mayor Brandon Johnson's office just posted this video of the gift room — two weeks after the IG report raised questions. Johnson had invited press to view it. Didn't happen. Now, his office says public viewing will happen with quarterly videos. He also added an online gift log.
NEW: Chicago is a step closer to legalizing "granny flats" & coach houses by right citywide. Aldermen voted 13-7 to advance the move advocates say will add affordable housing & opponents say will harm neighborhood integrity. For @chicagotribune gift link: chicagotribune.com/2025/07/15/chi…

New in here: The pension sweetener that passed the state legislature would bring police and fire funds down to less than 18% funded, per city. The ball is now in Gov. JB Pritzker's court. Will he sign the bill that sends Chicago further into pension crisis or veto it? The cost:
It's grim, and it keeps getting grimmer. Chicago's City Council & Mayor Brandon Johnson will face an already huge budget shortfall, plus Trump cuts, a worsened pension picture, a CPS mess & more that will be solved with new taxes &/or cuts. By @ad_quig: chicagotribune.com/2025/07/13/upc…

Chicago police misconduct costs keep soaring with proposed $35 million in deals @JakeSheridan_ chicagotribune.com/2025/07/10/chi…
HUD accused Chicago aldermen of discrimination. @lizzie_kane17 w scoop about negotiations in limbo as Mayor Johnson’s administration has been slow to finalize response to settlement. With feds now potentially toothless, unclear how things will play out. chicagotribune.com/2025/07/09/ald…
Feels good to be a staff pick at my favorite Chicago bookstore @myopicbookstore (The City is Up for Grabs is out now in paperback, so there are options.)
A drive-by mass shooting killed four people and wounded 14 more late Wednesday night on the near North Side, Chicago police said. trib.al/Z1Rv2Rp
