Wins for the great Chris Smith and brilliant William Hague a few weeks ago hopefully demonstrating that, for all the immense noise about these elections, gravitas, experience and sound values do still win out.
I’m delighted that Chris Smith has been elected chancellor of @Cambridge_Uni. It’s a personal victory for him, of course, but also crucially for free speech and academic freedom which he advocated so strongly in his campaign.
I support @Ofcom on this. It’s not forcing people to watch public service channels - but making sure viewers know they exist, and can counter disinformation and misinformation.
The BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, STV and S4C need to work urgently with YouTube to make sure their content is easy to find on the platform. This is part of our six-point action plan to help secure the survival of Public Service Media. Read more 🔗 ofcom.org.uk/tv-radio-and-o…
I was on @newswatchbbc with @SamiraAhmedUK discussing the BBC’s Gaza coverage. The BBC’s daily coverage is good, in my view, but the failures in current affairs are serious; and they should have shown @ramitanavai & @bendepear’s film on Gaza doctors. bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod…
Needless to say, it is ridiculous that no current BBC News representative was willing to appear on the BBC News accountability programme this week.
An internal review finds that a documentary about Gaza breached the BBC’s guidelines on accuracy. What went wrong? In our last show of the series @rogermosey speaks to @SamiraAhmedUK on Saturday at 7.45 on BBC1 @BBCBreakfast and at 15.45 on the News Channel. Also on @BBCiPlayer
Last @newswatchbbc till September. No current BBC manager was available but @rogermosey is on to discuss the findings of the BBC's internal report on the controversial Gaza: How To Survive a Warzone documentary. From midnight on link or Sat 745am BBC1: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00…
This is a characteristically good piece from @MarkUrban01. The one thing I’d add is about the declining investment in defence journalism. A consumer/society focus in new correspondent posts isn’t necessarily in the public interest.
As Britain’s forces have dwindled they’ve become more and more secretive - read my latest blog markurban.substack.com/p/our-broken-c…
“The BBC IS worth fighting for. Its annual report this week showed continuing high levels of trust(in it).But the BBC cannot afford more own goals…It needs to learn from its travails”. Roger Mosey, ex head BBC News & Sport. The Times. Do not undermine key UK institution.
This was lovely.
Here is Choral Evensong from Selwyn chapel, broadcast live on 16 July by @BBCRadio3. The choir was in brilliant form, we thought, and there’s some lovely music. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…
I was on Radio 3 at 3pm today (doing a reading for Choral Evensong) and Radio 4 just after 4pm (my more natural territory of the Media Show). But no word yet from @bbc5live about their plans for the next hour…
@rogermosey Please thank your @Selwyn1882 Chapel team for a peaceful oasis, in what for me has been a fraught day, in the form of Choral Evensong @BBCRadio3 this afternoon.
Too many unforced errors - but the BBC is still worth fighting for. My piece for @thetimes. thetimes.com/article/97dd1c…
Mine too, just voted.
Voting opens this week in the election for @Cambridge_Uni chancellor. My choice is Chris Smith of @pembroke1347. We need someone with great political contacts; a commitment to free speech; and deep knowledge of the university. So he is, I reckon, the perfect candidate.
Brilliant tennis. The next happiest people in London: ITV because Wimbledon isn’t going to clash with the football.
This article illustrates many of the reasons why I voted for Chris Smith for chancellor of @Cambridge_Uni. Chris Smith: ‘I disagreed with many things Kathleen Stock said, but she had a right to say them’ telegraph.co.uk/gift/fcc9e6d55…
Here’s the super friendly @Selwyn1882 team greeting visitors on a hot @Cambridge_Uni Open Day. But we offer shade and refreshments along with that warm welcome…

I’m so proud of this lot: the new @Selwyn1882 graduates. They, and young people like them, make it possible to be optimistic about the future.

The BBC made bad mistakes at Glastonbury. But politicians (via @telegraph) are now trying to micromanage the corporation’s response. The BBC should be independent and accountable, but accountability doesn’t mean doing what Lisa Nandy and Stuart Andrew say.
