Reading books and materials that go beyond what is required is always a good starting point. Being exposed to ideas in the wide world, you will tend to develop a hunger for more and more knowledge.
The definition of a reader is someone who has more books they want to read than time available to read them.
There is only one secret to writing: Consistent, careful practice. You sit down every day and you write. You edit. You read great writers and see what they did better than you. You write theirs out, and compare it to yours. Then you try again.
