These findings suggest that Klebsiella can resist phages via changes in gene expression, offering a flexible and dynamic alternative to mutation-driven resistance. A new layer of complexity in phage-bacteria interactions!💡🌌
Using single-cell assays, we found that once phage pressure was removed, these acapsular cells rapidly restored capsule production regaining sensitivity to phage. A fast and reversible response to phage selective pressure! 🦠🔁
In our study, phage infection selected for acapsular variants without any detectable mutations. However, we observed a significant downregulation of capsule related genes via transcriptomics. A non-mutational route to resistance! 🔬📊
Previous studies showed that Klebsiella evades phage infection by losing or modifying its capsule due to mutations in capsule biosynthesis genes 🧬
