I agree that, for the great majority, rural ERs are not glorified walk-in clinics but @picardonhealth's was more about the harsh reality that we can't sustain an ER in every small community. And we can't.

@picardonhealth is again, quite right (mostly). A number of years ago, there was a study of ERs in Ontario following the trial introduction of decidedly minimum standards. 50% of them failed to meet that standard.

It's hard to call it a hospital without ER. It's a major path for admissions. In some places ER diagnoses, stabilizes and admits upstairs. ER is the hospital in many places. Let's hold onto basics and yes - that also means some ERs will close. By @picardonhealth…
