Uuuh, the first paper from the Todesco lab! A phased, chromosome-level assembly for nettle - it not only stings, but it is also full of chromosomal rearrangements!🥬🧬 Great work from Kaede Hirabayashi, in collaboration with the Deyholos and Cronk labs biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
New #HeredityPodcast: The use of genetic simulations is gaining popularity. In this episode we learn about SLiM (messerlab.org/slim/), one of the most popular software packages, from one of its creators - Ben Haller. @GenSocUK #Genetics #Evolution

Update—I defended my dissertation back in the spring! More recently I finished all the revisions and formatting and am officially done!

in a new preprint w/ @cdanielcadena, we ask whether available reference genomes accurately reflect the latitudinal gradient of biodiversity. we find they do not: doi.org/10.1101/2024.0…
I’m proud to have taken part in last week’s New Phytologist next generation scientists #npnextgen meeting with so many exceptional early career scientists – inspirational.
How to shorten scientific manuscripts - great advice here from @AycoTack et al: buff.ly/4c6dZwX

Very cool new work on the genomics of distyly loss in yellow flax 💥
Our new paper testing long-standing hypotheses on the genetic causes and genomic consequences of distyly breakdown is out advance access in MBE academic.oup.com/mbe/advance-ar… Thanks to all coauthors! @juanitaguv @PanagiotisZerv3 @zopos @marcofraca @mabdelaziz_moha @NBISwe @ngisweden
nice interview w/ @david_manahan discussing his work on alternative splicing and house mouse adaptation
NEW Heredity podcast: Genes are recipes for proteins - but, if a gene can make more than one protein, how does that affect genetic variation and adaptive evolution? We discuss these questions with @david_manahan @MVZUCB @berkeleyIB @GenSocUK #Genetics #evolution
Last year at SMBE I watched several talks on a live video feed from an overflow room because there wasn’t enough space in the main room 🫠 Why not have more concurrent sessions? The balance b/w talks and posters seems off imo.
No SMBE talk 😢. 3/3 abstracts I’ve submitted for talks have gone to posters. Quite dispiriting as a postdoc.
🚨 New pub! How else are PLANTS special? Read my take on how botanical research can and has moved beyond investigating patterns in light of landscape change & to inform our understanding of past geologic and climatic processes 🧵

shoutout to bff @peter_innes1 for a wonderful PhD exit talk about his work on Lewis flax at @CUBoulder today—great storytelling and science communication, with beautiful figures and data 👏
Our work is in press academic.oup.com/aob/advance-ar… in this paper, we showed that flowering onset in #paleflax, the wild crop relative of flax, correlates with latitude (later onset towards the north), but the local climate of populations predicts better the population variation
