It is very unusual, unfortunately, for someone of Conrad’s stature to have invested this much effort in K-12 education. He deserves a lot of credit, just like Jelani Nelson.
Congratulations to Brian Conrad for being awarded the Barry Prize by the American Academy of Sciences (@americanacad), in part for his efforts in K-12 math education. youtu.be/2R6UBcH1Yg0?si…
It is good to be aware of how vacuous and out of touch these Manhattan Institute demands are. When polling actual people with low confidence in higher ed, the most common responses are: too expensive (21%), don't teach practical skills (21%), too liberal (17%).
Academics should be aware of stuff like this that will continue to come. It is very, very aggressive and poorly reasoned and thought out, just a tantrum. There are a lot of influential (dumb, but currently influential) signatories on this. manhattan.institute/article/the-ma…

After I left OpenAI, I knew I wanted to be at a non-profit but wasn't sure whether to join or start one. Ultimately I started one bc [long story redacted] but RAND is one I considered + their pivot to taking AI seriously is a great thing for the world: x.com/ohlennart/stat…
My team at RAND is hiring! Technical analysis for AI policy is desperately needed. Particularly keen on ML engineers and semiconductor experts eager to shape AI policy. Also seeking excellent generalists excited to join our fast-paced, impact-oriented team. Links below.
I don’t know how much you read into the ranking here (not much) and a lot are very close but interesting ranking here. Science is higher than police, higher education is higher than church, medical system is higher than presidency, public schools is higher than SCOTUS, …
"Science" is now the third highest supported institution in the US, after small business and the military. Higher ed is fifth.
This is probably my favorite math problem: the Shannon Graph capacity. It led to the birth of at least two deep mathematical fields: SDP relaxations, the Lovasz theta function and also Perfect graph theory. it’s also central in index coding and network coding. If there is an…
Given a graph G(V,E), the k-th AND-power of the graph is another graph with k^{|V|} vertices indexed by the ordered k-tuples (v_1, .., v_k) of vertices from V. In this new graph, there is an edge between (v_1, .., v_k) and (u_1, .., u_k) only if for all i=1,.., k, either u_i=v_i…

MILLER: If you look at photos of the Empire State Building being built, you don’t see any illegal aliens. When you look at the photos of the NASA control room during the moon landing, you don’t see any illegal aliens. Americans built, sustained, and powered this country for two…
Back in grad school, when I realized how the “marketplace of ideas” actually works, it felt like I’d found the cheat codes to a research career. Today, this is the most important stuff I teach students, more than anything related to the substance of our research. A quick…
