Hi, today we are sharing the results of the first research project I meaningfully contributed to: a suite of large scale open-source protein language models, dedicated to the loving memory of my mother, Rita Guidi. arxiv.org/abs/2205.05789

Structural brain preservation is a.) something we can work on seriously & scientifically, and b.) not a solved problem yet. This is a good essay explaining why.
"I prepared a sample for an electron micrograph. What I saw devastated me. The brain was shredded. Not only were the synapses ruined, the entire structure was riddled with holes. That was what my professor's brain must look like."
Yuxi's (@layer07_yuxi) new post on China's economy is worth reading. Especially the sections on the stock market and housing market. yuxi-liu-wired.github.io/essays/posts/s…

Over the years, scientists have inserted chloroplasts into mammalian cells & zebrafish—a step towards "photosynthetic animals." But @ClamonsSam ran the numbers. A mammal can't get all of its energy from photosynthesis, unless it is super tiny and lives in the Sahara! New Blog🔻

Wouldn't it be great if we could not only image large connectomic volumes, but also completely reconstruct them? And if a whole mouse brain project didn't cost billions? With the PATHFINDER preprint (biorxiv.org/content/10.110…), we preview a future where it doesn't have to.
I recently gave a talk at Anthropic on why I think we should be taking near-term AI welfare seriously. Video below and on YouTube. See thread for some main points + link to transcript.
New episode Much fun chatting with @LauraDeming! We discuss: - personal identity, and what, exactly, we want to preserve - what a “more humane transhumanism” might look like - scientific awe - seeing inside the cell - the antimemetic qualities of reversible cryopreservation -…

we made a map! gap-map.org is a tool we built to help you explore the landscape of R&D gaps holding back science - and the bridge-scale fundamental development efforts that might allow humanity to solve them, across almost two dozen fields
My new article for @asteriskmgzn about the history of and path to c.elegans brain simulation is out today - excited to be working on the next steps!

"at a tile scanning speed of ~1 min/mm3 with 10^12 pixels over 14 hours, we image the centimeter-sized fly brain at an effective resolution comparable to electron microscopy" x.com/nc_znc/status/…
