My dad—arguably the best in the world—has sailed away. He was an advocate of science, a caring cardiologist, and a history enthusiast. He loved telling jokes and making people laugh. I will do the same: laugh and make laugh, until we meet in the deep blue... So it goes...

My paper is out!! 🎉 "Opponent control of reinforcement by striatal dopamine and serotonin", @Nature Here, we show that dopamine and serotonin signals form a gas-brake system for reward in the mammalian brain 🧠 THREAD ⬇️ 1/n
Indeed, it's an exciting new tool! Congrats to all. Cannot wait to start using the setup...
This is something we are very excited about. @lodder_bart led this development project collaborating with @LinTianPhD lab. The technology makes lifetime photometry easy and, with the new dopamine sensor, allows measurements of phasic and tonic DA in vivo biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Pls chk out the Bruchas lab's new preprint "Endocannabinoids facilitate transitory reward engagement through retrograde gain-control". Congrats @DavidJMarcus2 @cloverpharm @StellaLab11 @Graphtablet & many other colleagues. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
I’m excited to share the most recent study from the @mbruchas lab, which represents the culmination of my postdoctoral work, and serves as the platform for my future research programs investigating the in vivo role of the endocannabinoid signaling system! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
(1/7) Far-red dopamine sensor is coming! Excited to introduce our chemigenetic DA sensor, HaloDA1.0! #Dopamine #FarRedSensors, #GRAB biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Excited to share work from Twitter less Juan Enriquez-Traba, grad student from the lab. Juan and the team demonstrate that dopamine regulates differential aspects of reward, motivation vs reinforcement, via co-expressed D3 and D1 receptors nature.com/articles/s4159…
Imagine your favorite top level admins at your school. Who court Epsteins to meet their next fundraising goals. Who care more about the alphabet initiatives than the people the alphabet belongs to. Those have taken control of the Democratic party. And sure, pardon your son.
Two favorite friends of mine talking science 😊
Every neuron in your brain (every cell in your body!) has the potential for universal computation. @theHessam describes why that's important, and one way RNA, and it's secondary structure, could have evolved that ability using combinatory logic. braininspired.co/podcast/199/
The first piece of work from my PhD has now been uploaded to biorXiv! Short 🧵below:
Hunger modulates exploration through suppression of dopamine signaling in the tail of striatum biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… #biorxiv_neursci
It may surprise the tax payer, but I work for a company that thinks “because the exact same item was 60% cheaper there” is not a justified reason to pick vendor A over the company approved (read favorite) vendor. I suppose research dollars aren’t real money.
I am giving a talk on Nov 7th. Help me pick a title (Polls close on Nov 6th). :: Spatio-temporal dopamine dynamics for learning, motivation, and beyond :: What shall we do now? A eulogy for science, wisdom, and hope
Solid paper (as expected) from Arif and co. Congrats, team!
Happy to share the latest from @Hamid_DiRE_lab biorxiv.org/content/10.110… The RL community has made important strides in understanding flexible behavioral control, especially wrt dopamine. But a longstanding, vexing puzzle is the relationship b/n “phasic” and “tonic” DA.
Just watched Ken Loach's final film. It's not his best. But it reminds you what a good movie should be about... And what decent moral values are like. This is what we need more of, in these dark days. Thank you good sir, for all the beauty and compassion, for all these years
