🇰🇪 @ProgIntl member @MathareSJustice warns: Kenya is on the brink of slipping into an abyss. As protests continue against IMF-imposed austerity, the state responds with bullets, killing dozens — and brands human rights defenders as terrorists.
Recently, HRDs & activists have been charged with terrorism for peacefully protesting and picketing as per the freedoms enshrined in Article 37. This criminalization of dissent is a tactic to reduce the civic space amidst rising critism. Take a read.👇 matharesocialjustice.org/eje-campaign/c…
"Brazil's sovereignty is non-negotiable. Justice will not bow to those who attempt to undermine the democratic regime, & as President Lula stated, we will not accept interference from other nations in internal affairs...tariffs an irresponsible & criminal campaign against brazil"
A soberania do Brasil é inegociável. A Justiça não vai se curvar aos que tentam derrubar o regime democrático e, como disse o presidente Lula, não aceitaremos intervenção de outras nações em assuntos internos. A taxação anunciada por Trump é resultado de uma campanha…
Unilateral sanctions kill civilians, as once again demonstrated in a peer-reviewed study. They're not just morally wrong, they also drive migration, damage economic interests, and hurt the US standing in the world. It's past time for us to rethink our sanctions-first approach.
NEW: @ceprdc’s @TheLancet study finds unilateral sanctions kill about 564K people annually - that rivals the death toll from armed conflicts. Sanctions are as deadly as war itself. bit.ly/Sanctions_Study

New research published by the Lancet finds that economic sanctions imposed by the USA and EU are associated with more than 500,000 deaths per year since 1970, five times more than deaths by war. thelancet.com/journals/langl…
🚨This is big: Unilateral sanctions kill >500k people per year — comparable to global armed conflict deaths — finds a new study in the prestigious, peer-reviewed @LancetGH by @frrodriguezc, @SilvioRRendon, & @MarkWeisbrot of @ceprdc bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

"Higher-income countries owe lower-income countries massive amounts of technology" is right. So-called "Forced technology transfer" is decolonization, is reparation.
The idea that lower-income countries 'steal' technology from higher-income countries is ridiculous. Let me explain. Transnational corporations in higher-income countries are completely reliant on labour and production systems in lower-income countries to generate profits. For…

It was a pleasure speaking with @CSantucciPhoto of @NY1 about the impacts of the second Trump administration’s Cuba policy and ongoing opportunities to travel to the island ten years after the opening of the US and Cuban embassies in Havana and Washington. spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/buffalo/in…
"The dirty secret of sanctions policy is that [civilian] harms are often intentional. It is not collateral damage — it is the mechanism of pressure." Read CEPR's @michael_galant and @Eleonora_Pierga on how Trump revealed the truth about US sanctions on Syria.…

I interviewed Mona Ali (@MonaAli_NY_US) about dollar dominance, the sources of American hegemony and whether the the US's currency is an exorbitant privilege or burden

For years, US policymakers claimed that sanctions didn't harm Syrian civilians. After Assad fell, they finally admitted the truth. @Eleonora_Pierga and I on how sanctions were (intentionally) immiserating the Syrian people all along, in @RStatecraft. responsiblestatecraft.org/syria-sanction…
The US is threatening 50% tariffs on Brazil if it doesn't drop the legal case against Bolsonaro. Sanctions as a tool of political interventionism.
Do humanitarian carve-outs to sanctions work? “We have mountains of evidence that broad sanctions, such as those that have been imposed on Syria, severely harm civilians,” @michael_galant told @inthesetimesmag. “It’s like stealing someone’s money, depriving them of every source…

Economic sanctions have debilitated Syria’s healthcare system. Even as sanctions are lifted, it could take many years to recover. I spoke to @AndreiPopoviciu for his story: inthesetimes.com/article/syria-…
