Mathare Social Justice Centre (MSJC)
@MathareSJustice
Social justice advocacy and documentation of violations in Mathare, and other poor urban settlements in Nairobi.
Since @NPSOfficial_KE are not investigating ongoing abductions, together with @KituoSheria, through Khaminwa & Khaminwa, we have filed petition HCCHRPET No. E002 of 2025 to declare the AG to refer them to the @IntlCrimCourt as crimes against humanity.

Recently, HRDs & activists have been charged with terrorism for peacefully protesting and picketing as per the freedoms enshrined in Article 37. This criminalization of dissent is a tactic to reduce the civic space amidst rising critism. Take a read.👇 matharesocialjustice.org/eje-campaign/c…

We condemn the continued criminalizaition, intimidation and abduction of activists by government security apparatus. The right to protest is enshrined in Article 37 of the CoK 2010, and must be protected! matharesocialjustice.org/legal-empowerm…

Activist and Human Rights Defender, Boniface Mwangi has been arrested while at his home today. His electronics have been confisticated too, without any proper explanation. We condemn the targeted criminalization of HRDs while perpetrators of violence continue to enjoy freedom.

State violence has seen a quick evolution, & especially in slums such as Mathare. Since 2024, the police has formed unholy alliance with vigilantes, unleashing terror on youths organizing on ecological justice issues. This report highlights the injustices. matharesocialjustice.org/legal-empowerm…

Najua hampendi kuskia ukweli but Mathare Social Justice Centre are who we all need to emulate for this fight against Ruto to work. They have decades of organizing, mobilizing and resistance that we can learn and adopt.
MSJC and SJC Nairobi Chapter joined others to celebrate the life of Pheroze Nowrojee. His contributions to the struggle for human rights & social justice remains unmatched. In his final moments with comrades, he urged them to be steadfast in protecting the country. #RestInPower

Huruma Police beat up those arrested on 7/7/25, after asking for food and water. This young man was beaten and later released when they realized the injuries were grave. The courts too, have become complicit as they are working with the state to extend the illegal detention.

SOS! The DCI through Pangani & Huruma Police Stations are illegally holding tens of Saba Saba Protesters for more than 48 hrs. They have not been arraigned in any court of law as they are still struggling on how to present their trumped up charges @LawSocietyofKe @AmnestyKenya

Anthony Kanare and his friend, Fred, are being illegally held and being tortured at Huruma Police under the instructions of DCI. Its more than 48 hours and they have not been produced in any court. We condemn these blatant attacks on HRDs and to an extention, our constitution.

The state through Huruma Police continues to illegally hold members of MSJC's ecological justice network; Anthony Muoki & Fred Odhiambo. They were arrested yesterday, 7th July, while peacefuly participating in the Saba Saba commemoration. We call for their immediate release.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS IS OPEN! Community leaders. Rights advocates. Everyday champions. If someone you know is boldly advancing human rights in Kenya, let their story be told at the biggest stage for the recognizing human rights work in Kenya. Nominate them for the 2025…
7/7 is a historic day which reminds us of the past struggle for pluralism in Kenya. 35 years later, our democracy remains at the mercy of a cabal of selfish political elite that seeks to stay in power through any means. Today we march to reclaim the powers of Article 1 of CoK.

Njeri Mwangi is attending the ongoing Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen, Denmark. She narrates and links the current Gen Z struggle in Kenya and the grassroots ecological work in Mathare with the global climate justice campaign. Take a read! matharesocialjustice.org/mathare-green-…

Finally, #Muthaiga3 are free. Thank you for the solidarity extended to our comrades from Friday. The cash bail given of 200k each is punitive but we must understand that these are methods of deterence from protests. The message from our comrades is clear, protest is not a crime!

Today, MSJC was represented by Cde. Njeri Mwangi at the ongoing Roskilde Festival, the biggest in Denmark. MSJC together with Dreamtown had the opportunity to plant 27 memory trees in honour of the Gen Zs as part of linking the struggles of the Global South and North.
