BC citizens (if not politicians) need an independent health data czar for BC. This would be something like CIHI, but more timely, tailored to BC, and with more regulatory teeth so it can demand data be turned over and doesn't depend on what the provincial govt deigns to provide.…
VIHA has started posting wait times for its ERs online (islandhealth.ca/find-care) These aren't based on real-time data but historical averages (cheknews.ca/how-can-we-tru…) making the accuracy somewhat questionable. However. It *does* mean that they have a collection of more…
The way the NHS in England works is the opposite It assumes that people have the capacity to get better by themself or with minimal care, otherwise the vast majority of patients referred wouldn’t be assessed and discharged or redirected to charities; some never meet the…
Psychiatry survives only by endlessly repeating its core mantra: “You have no power to heal yourself. You cannot change your thoughts and feelings. You need our interventions and drugs.” It’s the exact same mechanism by which NGOs keep developing countries in dire poverty.
As an aside, some stats on Richmond UPCC (from FY2023-2024): - 34% of budget spent on physicians (#5 in BC's 35+ UPCCs, avg 25%) - 26.24% on overhead (#6 lowest, avg 30.82%) - primary care staffing targets - 94% of FPs, 101% of NPs - nursing staffing target 92% (6th lowest, most…
Bloated healthcare bureaucracy got us into this mess. The NDP figures with a bit more it’ll help us get out of this mess.
Lord help us all if the govt and IHA response to this is to hire more administrators to “improve” things. We all know the NDP answer to efficiency is more bureaucracy 🤦♂️
We have been rationing healthcare services in BC for many years but the rationing is getting exponentially worse. We are now rationing "essential" services that used to be available in a timely manner. We are limiting access to primary care, speciality care, diagnostics,…
Funny you should mention that, @PeterMilobar - Interior Health just added another Vice President without even posting the job. #bcpoli

While I acknowledge your point, the fact that "the other guys will be worse" is frankly a shitty justification that has perpetuated their destruction of the health system for too long. It may be a pragmatic outlook, but not one I choose to live by.
Have no idea about % of refusals. Doesn't really matter how many new doctors we train if a) Family Medicine continues to be considered a lesser career and b) rural Canadian service continues to be considered lesser still.
Thanks, Alan. I'm curious if you've seen data on how many bright young Canadians are turned away from medical schools in Canada due to limited positions each year? I read a Med Post article years ago stating the CMA estimated only 1 medical school position for every 9 eligible…
“Our public health care system is crumbling, and we need to have an honest conversation with people, and not trying to look at it through rose-coloured glasses.” About what we pay, what we spend it on, what results we get, what we should expect, and who is accountable.

Bingo! And the block funding incentive is superseded by an even bigger one—don't rock the (political) boat, or make anyone in govt or leadership look bad. Changing the incentives is key to changing our health system. All of the on-the-ground ideas that HCWs have are rounding…
There are literally thousands of rare and complex disease patients being denied care that we would get if we lived a couple hours south (and had insurance). There is a serious lack of expertise, modern assessment and treatment approaches, and coordinated care for rare and complex…
This would not happen if public hospitals were funded on a per patient encounter basis. Canada is unique amongst developed countries in using block funding/ global budgets as a method of funding hospitals. Every patient represents a cost item! globalnews.ca/news/11303435/…
Fiscally the Eby NDP is completely out of control and worse they are not getting results for all of this spending. It is almost as if they have absolutely no idea what they are doing in the West annex.
"The province’s taxpayer-supported debt has more than tripled since the NDP took office in 2017 & metrics such as debt-to-revenue as well as debt-to-GDP have at least doubled, as have interest costs. Two financial agencies downgraded B.C.’s credit rating in the last 3 months."…
I'm truly grateful that Conservative MLA's like @MLABrennanDay @DrKindyMLA and even @JohnRustad4BC are speaking out about the inexcusable failures of BC's health system. But please, for this to change, you need to do far more than say "these guys suck" on social media or at a…
Prince George is on Obstetrics diversion for complex maternity in August. Now Kamloops is sounding the same alarm. Two major centres. Deliveries can’t wait. Rural British Columbians are receiving second class healthcare in BC under the NDP.
It was all right except that dig at drug users. I keep seeing the right pitting drug users against rare and complex disease patients - it’s not an either or situation. They’re sick and deserve help and evidence based care too. We are not in competition. There’s enough to go…
