Important!
#JEEAdvanced #girls Newspapers reported pass percentage of 22.7% as highest since 2017. Can be misleading - it reflects the % of only the girls appearing for the exam. More accurate monitor of the progress of #genderequality is girls qualifying of all candidates - male & female.
Latest study published in Nature shows that gender gap in maths starts early, right from the first year of school! I share my thoughts on what needs to change in how we define and teach maths in early education. nature.com/articles/d4158… Thanks @labhopping for the shoutout!
A new big data analysis from France shows that the ‘mathematical gender gap’ first emerges during the very 1st year of school. Not to miss @meghnanc's call to broaden what counts as being "good" at maths, so that girls can succeed on their own terms. nature.com/articles/d4158…

In addition to this, I know a number of specific situations where women in STEM went to extents to suppress the limelight - out of humility - but an unnecessary humility that she has been guilted into by male colleagues disgruntled abt not being equally celebrated.
I think that is true of anyone in the limelight (reminded of Rush's song Living in the Limelight), but women in higher positions in STEM are often called upon to do more work since there aren't enough of them to be on committees, give WiS talks etc.
In general, women get asked to be on too many committees, to have better representation, and this affects even those who are not in the limelight; and I am sure it gets even more so for those in the limelight.

We have noticed that every time a woman in STEM is boosted to limelight, there is a peculiar burden placed on them. They are doing us a great service by accepting the place of a role model, but professionally it costs them. Any thoughts?💬
Heart is happy to find out about this event that took place in March - a 3-day particle physics conference to remember Rohini Godbole. Such a powerful and meaningful way to celebrate a woman scientist. She would be pleased. indico.global/event/8300/tim…

Add this essay to your weekend reading list! Better yet, read it right now :) It's about as relavent to today's politics as a botany story could be.
