Can a country have, in the same year or if ever, the lowest consumption inequality and the highest income inequality? By claiming so for India, the World Bank mixes not only oranges and apples but also grapes for good measure ! indianexpress.com/article/opinio…
#Genderviolence It's not only a matter of workforce participation, it's a matter of women's life and death. Patriarchal resistance to women's freedom goes deep.

The same can be said of Andre Beteille.
Re-reading M N Srinivas and marvelling at his writing style which is free from jargon. Srinivas very clearly states that writing clearly is not an easy art but one that we should aspire towards.
shameful and shameless!

Not to mention that men have all the public space of the city to use as a toilet!
Praja, an NGO, released a report on Mumbai's public toilets. It said there is one public toilet seat for 752 male users, but when it comes to women, the ratio is one seat for 1,820 users. Minister Uday Samat acted swiftly. He ordered a probe....against the NGO. *Slow claps*
Most people who consume these inexpensive, readily available snacks most likely need the calories, the salt, the oil & the spices. They don't have the luxury of munching on expensive food all the time. These are not McDonalds meals which ruin the health of the poor in the US.
This is pure bullshit aimed at poor people who struggle to make a living selling pakoras and vada pav. Any govt that cared about people’s health would take action against the rich & powerful multinationals that sell dangerous Ultra Processed Foods food.ndtv.com/news/laddoo-va…

Same here (don't love the evaluation part with large classes (next semester 150). But enough interested students make the teaching worth it.
I love teaching and somehow I have always met students who are interested. Must say in this I am lucky.
Good that you're not abandoning teaching and students when everyone else seems to be doing so. Institutions need to reduce the publish or perish pressure so teachers can pay attention to students. If we don't want to teach then teaching should be formally abolished.
A lot of people whom I have recently spoken to express an aversion to teaching. They all feel teaching diverts their research energy. For me, research cannot exist without teaching. It's at the core of learning. Total classroom lover.

Dear @Olympics, this is not true. Warm regards.
🚨 Delhi is fully prepared to host the 2036 Olympic Games - CM Rekha Gupta.
So true... he would be in/out of the Coffee House hovering over all of us with a benign smile & a pithy word for each of us. I'm sure he was privy to the trials and tribulations of generations of students &faculty &took all the greats of our disciplines in his stride. RIP
Dada was an indelible part of the DSE fraternity for generations of students faculty members. The coffee house where he first worked, later co-owned, was the site of vibrant discussions & countless love stories. Dada’s memory with names, faces, personal details was phenomenal. 🙏
Just purchased it. Looking forward to reading it.
Just finished reading Meet the Savarnas and while I don’t usually gush about books — this one truly stands out. Witty, insightful , and an unflinching critique of everyday casteism — the kind that hides in plain sight and thrives in our (polite) society. It doesn’t just make a…
