Assistant Professor @UChicago | cancer • epi/genetics • metastasis • stem cells
18 years ago, I came to the US to pursue my dream of becoming a scientist. Last week marked a major milestone in this journey, as I accepted an Assistant Professor position at @UChicago, where I am thrilled to start my own research group in January 2025! (1/5)

Exciting new study from @OvCa_UChicago @ErnstLengyel!
🔥 Hot off the press: In a new @Nature study, @ErnstLengyel and team show that blocking NNMT in tumor-supporting cells restores immune response & stops ovarian cancer growth, offering a new strategy for hard to treat cancers. @OvCa_UChicago @uchicago_obgyn ow.ly/zzfZ50Wu3UW
A special @jclinicalinvest series on #PancreaticCancer led by @BenStanger01 jci.org/articles/view/… jci.org/articles/view/… jci.org/articles/view/… jci.org/articles/view/… jci.org/articles/view/… Articles by @lauradelongwood @Muir_Lab @MaddipatiLab
Very excited to share our preprint on #AI directed Deep Visual Proteomics (DVP) on #PancreaticCancer precursor lesions (PanINs), in collaboration with @OmicVision @MundAndreas Thousands of proteins from as few as ~100 precisely microdissected cells in archival samples!
Thought-provoking & important commentary by @SeanPitroda @AndrasPiffko @rweichselbaum!
📢 New in Cancer Cell: Radiotherapy is essential for local control—but can it unintentionally accelerate growth of distant metastases? We examine how RT-induced EGFR signaling and immune modulation may fuel metastatic progression. 🧠🧬🔬 Read: doi.org/10.1016/j.ccel…
I am thrilled to share with the world a new preprint, spearheaded by the truly amazing Jose Reyes in partnership with @LoweLabMSKCC. Focused on the benign to malignant transition in PDAC, uncovering roles of plasticity, tissue remodeling and P53 -> biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Welcome, Jeff & Rathmell lab! Faculty candidates -- a great opportunity. Apply! 👇🏻
I'm excited to start at @UCCancerCenter as chair of the Ben May Dept for Cancer Research and the @Ludwig_Cancer of UChicago! Things are moving already & we launched a faculty search for tumor microenvironment--take a look & apply! apply.interfolio.com/169039
Congratulations on this very impactful study @AndrasPiffko @rweichselbaum @SeanPitroda & team!
🔥 Hot off the press: Ralph Weichselbaum, MD, and his team published a new study in @Nature demonstrating that high-dose radiation to primary tumors can unexpectedly promote tumor growth at metastatic sites. @rweichselbaum @AndrasPiffko @UChicagoRadonc uchicagomedicine.org/forefront/canc…
.@JCChildsFund's support was instrumental to my postdoc training, as it allowed me to explore new research directions & join a fantastic community. Amazing to see the continued impact of the Fund over nearly a century -- Thank You! 🙏 Postdocs, apply for a JCC fellowship!

A commonly inherited genetic variant of human PCSK9 drives breast cancer metastasis and associates with reduced patient survival. @CellCellPress PCSK9 drives pro-metastatic genes by repressing LRP1. Anti-PCSK9 antibody has breast CA metastasis suppressive effects…
A really important resource in @CCR_AACR from @NinaSteele17 who deserves credit for collating all of these datasets in one place (besides her own de novo single cell and spatial transcriptomics data). Human #PancreaticCancer single cell atlas reveals association of CXCL10+…
Several years in the making (and aging), @Xueqian_Zhuang 's study on aging is out today @Nature. She finds, surprisingly, that aging suppresses tumorigenesis and stemness in the lung by promoting a functional iron insufficiency in the alveolar epithelium. nature.com/articles/s4158…
Riding the wave of excitement from the #DarkGenomeSymposium, our latest work shining light on a major part of the dark genome-retrotransposons in PDAC evolution-is now out @ImmunityCP cell.com/immunity/fullt…… Truly grateful to all of our amazing collaborators.
Thrilled to share our paper now out @Nature delineating #plasticity during #CRC #metastasis, a fantastic collaboration led by @andrewrmoorman @elliebenitez11, and @f_cambuli from the @KarunaGaneshLab and @dana_per lab! nature.com/articles/s4158… rdcu.be/dYAVK. A 🧵
Our new study published today @Nature uncovers that Transgelin 2 preserves T cell lipid metabolism and anti-tumor activity. Transgelin 2 is silenced in dysfunctional TILs, and restoring its expression enhances CAR-T cell therapy in #OvarianCancer 👇nature.com/articles/s4158…
6 years of work + Over 2 years in review + 1 extremely talented graduate student @LeonaNease + Amazing collaborators = One extremely cool new mechanism that regulates metastasis through modification of the selenocysteine tRNA! nature.com/articles/s4301…
Excited to share our recent work on a new mechanism for dormant disseminated tumor cells to evade immune surveillance. The preprint is available on bioRxiv now. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
A great resource indeed! 👇
The @TiroshLab has another gem of a preprint. The Curated Cancer Cell Atlas: comprehensive characterisation of tumours at single-cell resolution biorxiv.org/content/10.110… ~125 datasets from across 40 cancer types, comprising ~2900 samples. 3CA website: weizmann.ac.il/sites/3CA/
Check out this excellent review in @NatureRevCancer from my former lab on how cancer preconditions distant tissues, setting the stage for metastatic colonisation. Congrats @nickrabas @rutemmf @StefaniaDB8 @IMalanchi! 🎉 nature.com/articles/s4156…
🚨🚨Now online @NatureCancer, my postdoc work in @SawyersLabMSKCC with @dana_peer 🚨🚨 we establish a powerful organoid transplantation model of prostate cancer neuroendocrine transformation. Open access for all! @HHMINEWS nature.com/articles/s4301… A 🧵... /1
