The reason was the Conservatives objected to moving the “fixed” election date so that it wouldn’t fall on Diwali, because then some more MPs (mostly their own) would get pensions. The NDP decided to play along with that game, because they wanted to “be the adults in the room.”
Fun fact: the elections commissioner proposed an amendment to Bill c-65 last fall that would have closed the longest ballot loophole on signatures. Remind me: was there a reason legislation stalled in Parliament last fall? And did the CPC speak in favour of this amendment?
