The @DetroitCityFC season starts this week, so it’s time for my annual preemptive apology to anyone who follows me on Twitter for economic development policy or other substantive stuff and instead gets a dose of American minor-league soccer supporter culture. #DCTID

Economic development subsidies are a bad business strategy and terrible for taxpayers, please stop doing this and listen to me and @johnmoz instead: cei.org/news_releases/…

Almost a decade ago, my friend & former colleague @bendegrow published studies laying out the simple truth that sending more money to a school in Michigan doesn’t automatically improve the education kids get there. Education establishment hated it, but we keep proving him right.
I covered education for more than a decade, and I know how smart and passionate our school leaders are. These results are baffling and frustrating. Michigan spent big to fix schools. The result: Worse scores and plenty of blame bridgemi.com/talent-educati… via @BridgeMichigan

This @ceidotorg report (linked below) is interesting reading and highlights just how problematic subsidies can be. Subsidies are everywhere. In a perfect world, there would be none, and we’d have a low tax rate and a broad base. Regrettably, we do not live in a perfect world.
👉Corporate welfare isn't socially responsible👈 That's the main point of a new report from @RichardMorrison and myself published today by @ceidotorg. In it, we propose a new way to think about interactions between governments & businesses in the name of "economic development."
It was a great experience co-authoring with the smart and principled defender of taxpayers @johnmoz. CEOs of America: It's not too late to ditch unpopular ESG policies and embrace true responsible business instead!

New York City's economic development programs ($100 million in avgas sales tax exemptions for airlines?) are a textbook example of MLK's line about "socialism for the rich, and rugged free-market capitalism for the poor."
Even more specifically, we'd suggest @ZohranKMamdani take a close look at @NYCFinance's annual report on tax expenditures, which is chock-full of details on where the corporate welfare is flowing in NYC: nyc.gov/assets/finance…
