Now out @socprobsjournal: I find that housing market appreciation has driven most of the growth in the median White-Black wealth gap over the past four decades. Free-access link: bit.ly/3zJX1pO; thread below (1/n)
A few more words about this story: We spent a lot of time rereading the NIH document rolling out this policy. The numbers in it don't add up. The language is vague. NIH would not answer our questions about it. These are recurring features of memos proposing sweeping change.
NIH's proposal to cut the grants it pays for medical research will not just hurt elite coastal universities. Also at risk: The states of Missouri and North Carolina. The University of Texas Cancer Center. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
New report by @ZParolin: Housing costs, especially in high-cost states like California, are a massive driver of poverty. A few of Zach's key findings ⬇️ 🧵

This is the biggest issue facing America right now : Under The Big Beautiful Bill the wealthiest 10% would see a $12,000 increase, while the bill would cost the poorest people $1,600 a year, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. But here's the thing - $1600…

Actually, there is major distortion in San Jose Phoenix etc with Wall Street buying up single homes. And in artificial scarcity, with a broken market, rent caps make it less possible for landlords to exploit scarcity. But I prefer argument over labeling folks bad faith.
The median age of homebuyers has risen to a record-high…**56 years old** in 2024 That’s up from 45 in 2021 In 1981, the median age of homebuyers was 31 years old (Apollo’s Torsten Slok)

Excited that this paper is out! @p_fomby and I describe nonresident parent wealth among children in the US using the @umpsid. We show that children likely have access to this wealth, and that it matters for their educational attainment in young adulthood.
@jakejhays & @p_fomby, in “Nonresident Parent Wealth Among Children,” give 1st estimates of nonresident parent wealth for minor children, noting "the spread of resources across households...is critical to understanding" inequality. @umichStoneCID @PennPSC read.dukeupress.edu/demography/art…
Child poverty in the US is four times as likely to lead to adult poverty than in Denmark and Germany, and twice as likely than in the UK and Australia. Why? I write about our findings on "the intergenerational persistence of poverty" today in The Atlantic: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
New in @WorksInProgMag, I try to answer a question that isn't as obvious as it seems: How are housing shortages connected to #homelessness?
