This is a great essay about a tragic situation, one I can relate to all too well. But it's another reminder how grateful I am to now be at Grove City, where we do have administrators who value and support the liberal arts.
I wrote about the lack of administrative support for the liberal arts in @nytimes. The standard story we hear is that students don't want it. But a darker reality is that even when it wins big with students and donors it loses with those in power. nytimes.com/2025/07/17/opi…
So far this summer, I've written the first 16,000 words of a book manuscript on AI and the possibilities of living as creatures in a world designed for machines. But I'm still pretty happy with the arguments I sketched out in this essay.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Jane’s death. I never met her, but she was a boisterous, provocative, funny online penpal, and, most importantly, a poet of rare lyric grace. It was an honor to publish the poem below earlier this summer.
Some lit journals pay nothing. Today, appreciatively, I received a modest check from @utulsa for this poem, which appeared in @NimrodJournal last month. Editor-in-chief @BorisDralyuk and his excellent young staff put out a first-class journal that respects the folks it publishes.

To my knowledge, the closest he comes to a specific date is here: "The predictions of the apocalypse are accomplished already, as far as the white horse. The world cannot stand long, perhaps a hundred years at the outside" (TT #769). But 100 years post-pub would be c. 1640.
Did Martin Luther actually say somewhere he believed the world would end before 1600? The book I'm reading cites this blog post as evidence, but this source doesn't link to anything conclusive either. laphamsquarterly.org/roundtable/the…

When an author refers to "David" Alter's *Art of Biblical Poetry* in the opening pages, and then proceeds to distort Alter's argument, it reduces his credibility.
