I recently had the pleasure of talking about Reading Fluency with passionate teachers. You can check out what I said below. Thanks Read Ballarat for having me! youtu.be/avfZGMPJN5Q @Knight2Susan @kath_will5
There’s no better reminder that knowledge is domain-specific than trying to buy a new car. Also: anyone selling a mid-size SUV? 🚙

This episode between @rastokke and @BrunoReddyMaths is an absolute banger! There is no one better at making fluency fun than Bruno & I loved hearing him dive into the stories behind Times Tables Rock Stars

Great teaching carefully considers the information that needs to be excluded from the lesson. Presenting extraneous info often gets in the way of learning.
No, they can’t learn all of that in one lesson. No, that can wait until tomorrow. No, that’s not entirely relevant to the topic. No, that’s sort of an edge-case that will serve to confuse more than help them. A lot of teaching really is just an exercise in restraint.
It’s time to share what you think about AERO! If you have also used our National Ed Evidence body’s advice, resources, and leadership do take the time to complete this evaluation survey. It’s critical to the future of this organisation. insightssurvey.kpmg.com.au/wix/p322525561…
I've often heard Maths educators lament the fact that students don't know what the equal sign means... Engelmann & Carnine provide us with HOW to actually TEACH our students what the equal sign represents.

My wife: Aren't you meant to be relaxing? It turns out this is my definition of relaxing: having the time and headspace to dive into Engelmann & Carmine's Theory of Instruction!

Another day in paradise, designing problem sets for my absolute favourite algorithm – subtraction across internal zeroes! Very excited to have reached this point in EMP where I get to write these lessons.
Have you found AERO helpful in your school or for your practice? They're being evaluated and the results may have implications. The survey takes 7 minutes. RT if you think it should be distributed broadly. insightssurvey.kpmg.com.au/wix/p322525561…
Teachers built huge social capital during Covid, with strong community support. In 2022 the AEU urged us to accept a sub-inflation pay rise, and now complains we’re the lowest paid in Australia. This combative rhetoric ignores their own role & I don’t appreciate the mudslinging.

A great episode with lots of things to ponder!
🚨 New episode! 🚨I get a lot of questions about universal screening in math. I invited Amanda VanDerHeyden @amandavande1 back to the podcast to tell us all about & explain what makes a good screener, and why it matters. Listen here ➡️ podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/cha…
I'm struggling with some of the rhetoric from the AEU given that they negotiated a measley 1% increase twice yearly in the last EBA. theage.com.au/national/victo…
It was brilliant to learn from @C_Hendrick about responsive teaching & checking for understanding! @SharingBestPrac

“We can’t fix wellbeing if they can’t read.” 👏 - @SarahAsome at Sharing Best Practice
I've had the privilege of seeing @C_Hendrick present 3 times in the past 2 days! Here are some of my key takeaways: ➡️ we need to create a shared understanding ➡️ our super power is our LTM ➡️ learning is counter-intuitive ➡️ when teaching we need to ask: - Are students thinking…
