1/ “It’s what happened to us, only on steroids.” I spoke with a former World War II internee and descendants about the dangers of invoking the Alien Enemies Act: motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to reinstate a policy that guarantees legal representation for detained immigrants deemed unfit to represent themselves in court. I wrote about this critical government-appointed counsel program here: motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
"The bitterness is still there. The anger about what happened to him is still there.” More than 200 men sent to El Salvador were released from CECOT and returned to Venezuela. @nlanard and I talked to relatives and friends waiting to be reunited with them. motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
@isabelaalhadeff and I are in touch with some of the family members of Venezuelans sent to CECOT. They've heard their loved ones are on their way home and are on their way to reunite with them. motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
“It was a perfect storm.” In Milford, MA, a town where 30 percent of the population is foreign-born, the arrest of 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes da Silva set off a chain reaction unlike anything the community had seen before. My latest for @MotherJones: motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
NEW: A DOJ notice encouraging immigrants to "self-deport' is being posted in immigration courts across the country and sent to lawyers, including when their clients have already won asylum. Attorneys say the notice is misleading and a "scare tactic." motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
NEW! Two weeks ago Trump was stopped from sending more people to be imprisoned in El Salvador. Now we're learning who they were — and the stories are OUTRAGEOUS. One guy was accused of being in TdA because of his tattoos, which include Pikachu, Toad, and Patrick from SpongeBob!
Our latest investigation based on firsthand accounts from ICE detainees in Texas reveals how Venezuelans were nearly removed from the country under the Alien Enemies Act without a chance to contest the allegations against them. motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
New: @isabelaalhadeff and I spoke to lawyers and a relative of Venezuelans at the Bluebonnet detention center in Texas at risk of imminent removal under the Alien Enemies Act—potentially to El Salvador. The relative says his family member is being falsely accused.
Dozens of Venezuelans at the Bluebonnet detention center in Texas are at risk of imminent removal under the Alien Enemies Act. One of them is Omar Cárdenas, whose relatives say is "completely and utterly innocent.” My latest with @nlanard: motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
Yet ANOTHER story of a Venezuelan man ripped away from his family in the U.S. because of his tattoos; a tattoo of a rose and a crown. That’s it. It’s been three weeks and his wife and kids have no idea what happened to him. Like others, El Salvador is holding him incommunicado.
Talked to @isabelaalhadeff & @nlanard who have spoken to family members or friends of 10 people who have been sent to the El Salvador gulags. The number of Venezuelans who are totally innocent we sent there seems to be even greater than imagined. youtube.com/watch?v=iz4rVF…
ICYMI: @nlanard and I spoke with the relatives, friends, and lawyers of 10 Venezuelan men the Trump administration sent to El Salvador without due process. What they have in common? Tattoos. A rose, a hummingbird, a clock, an autism awareness ribbon. motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
A friend of Neri Alvarado, the young Venezuelan man with an autism awareness tattoo sent to El Salvador, shared this video from members of the swim club where he worked with neurodiverse children. It's in Spanish but I think the meaning should be clear to anyone.
NEW: @MotherJones reports that one of the men renditioned to El Salvador is Neri Alvarado, who was working in Dallas as a baker. An ICE agent told him they were questioning all men with tattoos. Neri has an AUTISM AWARENESS TATTOO in honor of his 15-year-old brother with autism.
New: @isabelaalhadeff and I spoke to relatives and lawyers for 10 Venezuelan men sent by the Trump admin to El Salvador. -All say their loved ones do not have gang ties -All of them have tattoos -One was told by ICE that agents were specifically targeting people with tattoos
