Couldn't agree more. There are too many shiny buttons out there! Learning while having the goal of creating something specific has been, for me, the best way to retain information and provides much needed focus.
One of the hardest loops to break for me as a 3D artist: learning for the sake of learning. I love discovering new techniques, but real growth comes when you use what you learn. Knowledge means nothing if it just sits there, turn it into something.
