Texas’s death row is one of the most punitive. One small change came with a new pilot program that allows certain men out of solitary confinement for a few hours each day. For some, it is the first time in a quarter century they’ve felt human touch. houstonchronicle.com/news/investiga…

Documents obtained by WBEZ and the Chicago Sun-Times through a public records request show that in 2011 the Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV sent his gratitude to then-Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn for abolishing the death penalty in Illinois. chicago.suntimes.com/politics/2025/…
TCADP is saddened by the passing of Scott Panetti. We are grateful for the mental health professionals and advocates who supported clemency for Panetti when he faced execution in 2014 & raised awareness of how the criminal justice system treats people with severe mental illness.
Scott Panetti died this week in a TX prison medical facility. Panetti had been on death row for 30 years. He was suffering from severe schizophrenia when he committed a horrific crime in 1992, killing his in-laws, Joe and Amanda Alvarado. Panetti was eventually ruled incompetent.
