Drug discovery; chemistry; Biophysics; Membrane proteins; #cryoEM; crystallography; #MicroED; Opinions my own. 👋👋👋
#cryoEM with energy filter & electron counting significantly increased resolution even for a full size protein like proteinase K. Sub-atomic resolution #MicroED rivals best reported Xray of Proteinase K but by using crystals a billionth the size. A section of the map is shown

It was wonderful seeing so many friends and colleagues ar ACA2025! We had our usual Gonen Lab dinner with past present and future members. Sorry to have missed @EmmaDanelius @maxclabbers and Anna. Good to see how wonderful everyone is doing

Not much changed has it...
The first internet message was sent from UCLA in 1969. It crashed after the second letter. We were trying to type “login.”
Cap it at $0...
Today, @NIH announced a new policy to cap how much publishers can charge NIH-supported scientists to make their work publicly accessible. This reflects our broader effort to restore public trust in public health by creating an open, honest, and transparent research atmosphere.…
HHS and NIH need to take immediate action to prohibit use of HHS and NIH funds to pay bogus new "article processing fees" or "article development charges" assessed on NIH-supported papers. @NIHDirector_Jay @SecKennedy
Publishing means making an article public. This can be done for free online like BioRxiv or nihms. No need to pay journals a single dime
If this news story is correct, science publishers Nature-Springer, Elsevier, and ACS will start, effective July 1, charging authors of NIH-supported papers additional new fees of "hundreds to thousands of dollars" above the extortionate publication fees they already charge.
Thank you all for the support! I’m honored to join the ASBMB Nominating Committee and look forward to contributing to the success of our community.
A new study led by @VashKurdistani has uncovered a surprising survival strategy in cells that may help explain how MYC-driven cancers survive and grow despite limited resources. Learn more about the findings: bit.ly/4ehBVzB
I hope UC, which is one of Californias biggest employers, is likewise engaged in such discussions to keep our federal funding intact. Losing federal funding at UC will be a disaster for the state, the country and for science.
"Other schools have been in discussions with the Trump administration about making deals that would keep their federal funding intact"
Since #MicroED demonstrated the first successful structure determination from 3D crystals using electron diffraction there are now sufficient numbers of structures in PDB and CSD to warrant a survey and the establishment of GOLD STANDARDS for MicroED. doi.org/10.1107/S20532…

Today we celebrated the Class of 2025 graduate students! Best wishes on your next adventure. We can’t wait to see all you accomplish. #ClassOf2025 #FutureLeaders
Is it comical or insulting that at this time of scientific financial uncertainty companies are asking for service contracts, additional miscellaneous charges and superfluous upgrades. how detached from reality are they? Do they not see the news? Dont they know funding is tight?
