The recently re-described Palaeocama anthrax is by far one of the weirdest lobopodians discovered yet! This Carboniferous worm was not only was it covered in hundreds of poisonous spines, but it's also the only freshwater non-Tardigrade lobopodian known! #paleoart #art #sciart

Ever noticed how ideas often show up when we’re not trying? Maybe during a quiet summer walk, as the mind wanders with the cicadas. Sometimes answers arrive once we’ve closed the laptop. #WeareTransmittingScience #LifeInScience #SummerThoughts ☀️🍃🌻
Palaeocampa anthrax, a fossil worm first described from Carboniferous rocks in 1865 as a caterpillar, is redescribed as a freshwater aysheaiid lobopodian with a unique sclerite armature and probable chemical defences, according to a paper in @CommsBio. go.nature.com/3TSRrbP

#FossilFriday rocks with a trip to Steep Rock MB, can't wait to go back and find amazing Devonian fish 🐟
This week had the chance to explore outcrops around the aptly named Steep Rock, Manitoba. Lots of potential to learn about #Devonian #fossils and environments, and the modern day views are pretty nice, too. #FossilFriday #ManitobaRocks

The final chapter of my PhD is finally published today in Nature Ecology and Evolution! Extremely proud of this culmination of years of work on the avian sternum, and grateful to everyone who contributed. Please reach out if you'd like a PDF 🎉 nature.com/articles/s4155…
472 pages and 4 years later I can finally call myself a Doctor! 🎓🎊 @UOP_SEGG Thank you to my viva examiners @Sansom_Rob and @MariemSaavedra for making it such a positive experience, and to my supervisor @nichnos and everyone who has helped and supported me along the way! 🎉🦐🌊
🌟 I’d like to share my exciting results and insights into 3D modeling, which can not only digitise your fossil (in this case, a baby mammoth tooth from Lithuania) but also remove infilled sediment to reveal its true morphology 🤓 ⬇️ #lithuania #model #palaeontology #fossil

It's Trilobite Tuesday! Pictured is a 2-in- (5-cm-) long Bumastoides from Wisconsin’s Platteville Formation. Partial specimens of the Ordovician trilobite are relatively common finds at this locale, while fully articulated examples, like this one, are exceedingly rare.
Our phylogenetic analysis places Palaeocampa among the Aysheaiids (the classic Burgess Shale animal Aysheaia being its namesake), a group of poorly known lobopodians known from the Cambrian and Ordovician. Palaeocampa is the only known aysheaiid to possess a sclerite armature.
