"This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you: God is light, and in him is no darkness whatsoever!" - the disciple who knew he was loved. #confidence #security #identity #love
This is so good to remember.
One of the ways the church seeks the common good is by helping define the common good. The church does not exist to serve the world's agenda but to embody and proclaim the kingdom of God, offering a vision of human flourishing as defined by our Maker.
Our first ever sabbatical starts tomorrow. After 25 years of full time ministry, Sandy and I could not be more thankful to our church, to our elders, and to Jesus for this gift of extended rest and restoration. We look forward to returning to Park Hill church in August! 🤟
Mary Magdalene was the first apostle of Jesus. Raised in male-pastor-only culture, I was taught the basic meaning of "apostle" was "sent one." How did I mis John 20:17?—where Mary is literally Jesus' first "sent one" to preach the resurrection, specifically to men.…
Who (or What) is God? This teaching got some good response. People are hungry for clarity on the identity of the Person Christians call "God." What do we mean by "God"? Why is it so important NOT to assume we are all talking about the same thing? youtube.com/live/GpTbGRjjo…
Should men and women be equipped to lead alongside one another as co-equal image bearers in God's Church? Absolutely. We loved having Dr @carmenjoyimes at Park Hill last month to unpack why this is so. Here's the live recording with audience Q&A: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/par…
Two days ago, Dr @carmenjoyimes delivered a KILLER one-two punch at our church last Sunday. Part One: Being God's Image. Part Two: Women in the Bible and the Church (with live audience Q&A) Hear both here: parkhillsd.church/past-teachings Thank you, Carmen! What a joy to host you.
Can Biblical Churches be LGBTQ-Friendly? I was honored to chat with the brilliant Dr. Juli Slattery on this topic. There are many challenges to leading a church well, especially when it comes to sexuality. I pray this is helpful (and healing) for many. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/chr…
This Sunday's sermon: Who (or What) is God? When we say “God”, we assume we’re talking about the same thing. But I'm convinced we're often not. If this God is a specific Person we Christians organize our lives around, then it’s important to know who it is we're trying to know.
Can you imagine if the church treated gluttony, inhospitality or forgetting the poor with the same intensity and intentionality as how it treats sexual sin? That's what YHWH wants us to do. Ezekiel 16:49–50
When it comes to sexual sin, the church has developed accountability groups, internet filters, books, sermon series, etc. Can you imagine if the church treated greed with the same intensity and intentionality? That's what the New Testament wants us to do. 1 Corinthians 6:9
Grown men yelling at each other on tv about sports is out. ❌ Grown men yelling at each other on tv about the book of Job in the Bible is in. ✅
With the paywall down, I thought I’d reshare this one from last week about Ash Wednesday and my unexpected midlife enthusiasm for churchgoing… thetimes.com/article/6fde34…
Nick and Tina Freitas' experience sounds identical to mine and Sandy's. I second every word of this video.
