If the DM thinks that losing a PC will make a player sad or if he feels like it for no real reason he may fudge the dice rolls. This is how one plays both B/X D&D and AD&D RAW. Advocacy of RAW D&D is advocacy for allowing dice fudging in a game. I don't fudge; I don't play RAW.
