Action on Empty Homes @emptyhomes
@emptyhomes
We are a national campaigning charity working to bring empty homes back into use as affordable housing for people who need it.
Our major new report with @qurbanist of @sheffielduni and @sse_data recommends policy changes to boost rural and coastal housing access. Inc proposals on '2nd homes', Airbnb licensing, planning, social housing, local tax retention & responsible lending: shorturl.at/kHLR5

The only housebuilding 'target' Government can meaningfully control and deliver is social housing - you want houses you can build them and pay for them; the private housebuilders have different priorities. You can also buy homes that already exist, e.g. emptyhomes @peterproperty
The Home Builders Federation say the 1.5m housing target is ‘slipping away’ due to factors within the control of the state. The idea the target can ever be met is nonsense. The idea that the pace of completions is dictated by the state is utter nonsense. hbf.co.uk/documents/1470…
Over the last decade in London we added more homes than households and longterm vacancy doubled in 8 years from 2016 - 2024 (up 93%) - how much of that is unsold newbuild? - while homelessness soared and schools close as families are priced out: we're building #TheWrongHousing
FT (£) ‘Barratt said the sales shortfall was “mainly due to the impact of fewer international and investor completions than expected” in its London business.’ ft.com/content/39f9ab… via @ft
'We’re building thousands and thousands of flats and nobody can afford to buy them” U just noticed?! #TheWrongHousing to end our housing crisis - demand is for homes families can afford to build lives in,not keyturn homes for 'investors' to exploit us with manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-m…
New English Housing Survey analysis out today, some findings ⬇️ 'Vulnerable' families, those receiving a disability benefit or other means-tested benefits, were much more likely to be living in poorer quality and damp homes.
Across the country, specialist homes for older people lie unused whilst housing waiting lists grow, and the housing crisis deepens.. Yet new retirement developments keep coming.. We’re keen to launch Retired Homes to uncover the truth about these empties: actiononemptyhomes.org/retired-homes
Retirement homes sit empty while people need housing. This situation needs attention. Please consider donating to support a vital investigation. Every bit helps us make a difference. gofund.me/be8179a5

The only real 'rent control' that meaningfully constrains price rise and enhances affordability is increased availability of social rent homes - that's why we need to #BuyTheSupply and retrofit as social. Maintaining overpriced rents on non decent homes is a mugs game @pmcondon2
London Review of Books. In the UK, it's also not about supply. Its about the spread of "landlordism": lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v47/… "The answer, he argues, is to be found at the bottom of the market not the top. He reserves his strongest contempt for the ‘supply guys’ who believe…
They go back to old tricks: "Foreign Buyers are vital to the Capital Stack in Condo Development" says one paid mouthpiece Well Duh... But we need to decide what we want as a country Foreign owned homes or homes for Canadians?
Fast Forward a couple of years the BC Government banned Foreign Buyers, so the they all went to Toronto to buy, then Toronto & Ontario outlawed Foreign Buyers then finally Canada banned them So NOT just 2% But when it hits the fan in Real Estate people get desperate 6/
The only way to reduce homelessness, tackle affordability and reduce the rising cost of temporary accommodation is to add a lot more social homes. Acquiring and retrofitting can kick start this - faster, cheaper and greener because 1 million emptyhomes is too many @Kwajotweneboa
Around 18,000 Social Homes will be built by this Government per year … Lambeth Council, a single borough in London currently has over 45,000 people waiting for social housing. This doesn’t even scratch the sides. Shelter called on the government to build 90k social homes a…
Thanks for sharing Pete, we think it’s time @getliving made affected leaseholders an offer to purchase our leases, we cannot wait for £400m of works to be complete before we’re able to move on with our lives
London's Olympic legacy - it's going to cost £411.1m to fix fire safety defects in the East Village housing in the Olympic Park. For residents in these homes (many of them shared owners sold an 'affordable' housing product), it has been years of misery with no end in sight
🚨 @getliving increases its fire safety provision to FOUR HUNDRED & ELEVEN MILLION POUNDS in respect of remediation work to make @EastVillageLDN safe! @Uma_Kumaran how was taxpayer funding used so recklessly. Those responsible must be held to account 🚨 #BuildingSafetyCrisis
1/ I've documented how 30+ years of privatization promises have turned into economic disasters. The evidence is overwhelming that "competition fixes everything" is a dangerous myth.
Unfortunately the”market” cannot and will not build housing with the intention of lowering prices.
