📢Our new British Association for Psychopharmacology guidelines on CATATONIA are now out!📢 💠22 experts 💠3 continents 💠>500 references Read the full #OpenAccess guideline here: doi.org/10.1177/026988…. @BAPsych #catatonia

The EU have reduced clozapine FBC monitoring to 3-monthly after a year. Hopefully the MHRA will follow suit. @Maudsley_pharm were the first to trial this, and the only ones to report on safety. A huge step forward for patients, and rational science. medscape.com/viewarticle/eu…
New study of over 120,000 #clozapine therapeutic drug monitoring samples finds #smokers may need lower #plasma levels than nonsmokers for treatment-resistant #schizophrenia. Adverse drug reactions appear earlier in nonsmokers, particularly in women. 🔗 journals.lww.com/psychopharmaco…
Do you ever think about the consequences of a brain that cannot forget? Should we be rethinking the movement disorder known as dystonia and helping people to forget? A brilliant new perspective by Mark Hallett in the journal Parkinsonism and Related Disorders highlights something…
It is now widely known and accepted that while smoking significantly increases one's chances of developing lung cancer, many people who have never smoked develop the disease. Similarly, some people who have smoked their entire lives never develop lung cancer. Unfortunately, this…
🕰️ What is Temporal Drift? Data that clinical prediction models face when implemented can differ from the data they were trained on, even in the same setting. This can be due to changing patients, treatments or practices The result? The model’s predictions start to go wrong.
Good to see solid negative findings in catatonia research. It gives you confidence that studies are being conducted well. In this study of critically ill patients from @JoEllenWilson's group, frailty was not associated with development of catatonia. doi.org/10.1016/j.jacl…
I think this is the most exciting thing to happen in depression for research for at least the last decade. Pramipexole works for TRD.
🧵THREAD: Our new study published in #lancetpsych! We found that pramipexole augmentation substantially reduced depressive symptoms in patients with treatment-resistant depression over 48 weeks of treatment. This is an important advance in how we treat depression! 1/6
Important study & big step forward for treatment-resistant #depression. 48wk RCT, #pramipexole showed ~4-point QIDS-SR benefit over placebo. Less hype, but bigger effects than psychedelic trials, for a scalable option that’s available to clinicians now. thelancet.com/journals/lanps…
Did a podcast with @DavidPuder and his team, it was a blast! Check it out if you’re interested in pediatric catatonia or catatonia in autism! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/243…
Medicine and #psychiatry in this country changed significantly today. Let’s hope this shift doesn’t come at the cost of quality #palliative care, or lead to premature, unnecessary deaths among the vulnerable, poor, and mentally ill. Time for the Lords to earn its keep…
MPs back legalising assisted dying in England and Wales by 23 votes bbc.in/45yQYTe
My letter in The Times today. Having capacity is key to #Assisted Dying bill. Capacity safety amendments were voted down. Capacity can be complex & difficult even with years' of experience.
The HoC votes to allow people to prematurely end their lives, against the advice of the country's experts on suicidality - the Royal College of Psychiatrists. So-called "progressive" MPs ignored the experts, pursuing fantasies of individual autonomy in hubristic utopianism 1/2
Assisted dying has passed the Commons with 314 votes to 291. Now on to the Lords but this is almost certain to become law.
Very exciting biomarker

I'm delighted to share our in-press paper busting 10 #catatonia myths. Let me know in the replies what myths you'd add to the list! doi.org/10.1016/j.jacl…
I'm a bit late to look at this paper, but it provides amazing insights into PD depression.
Delighted our (@jonroiser @ProfRobHoward @a_schrag @ymyymmr @karelkieslich) paper is now out in @Brain1878! 🎉 We show that #Parkinson's #depression may stem from a reduction in reward sensitivity that is unresponsive to dopaminergic medication: 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/brain/… 🧵⬇️
I'm so grateful to Max Fink for his work on ECT and catatonia, which has changed the lives of thousands of people for the better. On a personal level, he took the time at the age of 101 to meet me and provide guidance and mentorship. It was a great joy and privilege.
The world lost a visionary. Dr. Max Fink was a pioneer in catatonia research and care. At 98, he personally guided three of our founders when their loved ones were in crisis. His work saved many lives. We honor his legacy and remain committed to carrying it forward.
New paper on EEG in catatonia from the indefatigable James Luccarelli: psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.11…. ✅144 patients with catatonia and EEG (by far the largest n) ✅Catatonia not associated with abnormal EEG ✅Delirium (often comorbid in this sample) was associated with abnormal EEG
This is great from @rcpsych. Wisdom really is guiding.
We have serious concerns about the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill for England and Wales and therefore cannot support it in its current form. Our patients are among the most vulnerable in society and need to be sufficiently protected. Briefing👇rcpsych.ac.uk/news-and-featu…
Important finding
Cannabis is addictive and the withdrawal syndrome can have serious clinical implications. But since its onset is slow and the symptoms overlap with those seen in acute psychiatric disorders, doctors often miss it. Check out my latest study here:👇
