I think China has a bit of a branding problem: At least to European-language ears, “belt” just doesn’t have quite the right kind of warm and positive connotations. Why didn’t they go with “New Silk Road” or “21st Century Silk Road” or something like that? Much better sound to it!

My plan to revive American manufacturing is to: raise the price of inputs like steel, aluminum & copper; create shortages of rare earths; invite retaliatory tariffs; cut R&D; raise borrowing costs by blowing out the budget; and to cover it all in a thick cloud of uncertainty.
